I have my first ever dog and really need educating. What to buy, when to administer and what to look out for

Prescription treatments from the vets are much more effective than anything you can buy in a pet store.

Some people only treat when they see fleas and send of poo samples to do worm counts.

Personally I treat every month. I did use advocate but my dog hated the chemical smell and would not sleep plus it was a pain not being able to wash him or let him go swimming straight after application.

I now use nexgard spectra which is a monthly tablet that kills fleas, ticks (we are in a high tick area and have risk of lymes disease) and worms. I also use drontal tablet once every 6 months to kill the other worms that nexgard doesn't. All of this is obtained from my vet and is part of their vip plan.

Isn't Drontal to be taken every three months?

BiteyShark · 19/02/2018 13:37

My vets do a 6 month treatment for that. I think they consider that to be enough on top of the monthly nexgard treatment.

Do they have a vet plan? The price varies by dog size but for a medium dog I pay £16 per month which includes two check ups a year, all flea and worming treatment and 15% of anything we buy from them, any consultations and treatments.

Yes we asked about that but we cannot start it until November when her first injection is due.

Not sure what form the wormer took, Doctordonowt, but I also use Drontal tablets every six months in addition to the monthly Advocate spot-on stuff. I can get those Drontals cheaper online than from my vet.

Doctordonowt · 22/02/2018 19:05

We found that out after we returned from the vet
