Squeaky bloody dog!

Dog is part husky and rarely barks except during play with another dog. She's nearly 2. Is well fed, well exercised, lots of toys, lots of interaction and training for the brain, spends lots of time following the house cat around, socialised with plenty of dogs on a regular basis. Is healthy, has had recent check up.

Oh my god, the SQUEAKING! It's like a whine, but small, low tone, "hmm, hmm, hmm" ALL. THE. TIME. At least a dozen times a day.

Usually accompanied by wagging of tail.

Tonight, she started up just after eating her dinner, then we went for a short walk, she had a pee and poo and on getting home, spent 5 mins training in her tricks (fairly basic ones still). The moment I sat down, it started.

Any ideas? What the hell do we do - the sound is driving us up the wall! She can do this for hours. She is especially bad when she's exhausted, a lot like an over-tired child, but that shouldn't be an issue today.

Huskies are very vocal in exactly the way you describe: not so much barking as a range of other whine, howl, moan type noises. This is an integral part of the breed so to be expected and the chances are you will not be able to stop this .

You could try:

making sure she gets zero reward for the noise, when she makes a noise then all attention stops (no eye contact, no talking to her - not even to tell her to shut up).

give her something to do that is not compatible, such as chew a frozen kong.

teaching her to make the noise on cue so that you can then also teach her to be quiet.

These might help but, as I say, Husky vocalisations are a massive part of their character so you may never 'fix' it.

my staffie does that! She cant seem to bark properly, but she squeaks and whimpers and chirrups like a dolphin. I think its funny

Branleuse · 11/02/2018 22:47

actually probably not that funny if its all the time.

Nope not funny! Occasionally she make a proper husky noises and has a "conversation" with you - that's funny, but the whining isn't......
