How to stop ddog going wild when he’s off strict rest?

My very active and lively dog has been on strict rest for a week after injuring his shoulder (soft tissue injury so nothing serious but vet very strict about the need to rest).

We’ve been having very short, very sedate on-lead potters to stop him from going insane. He’s obviously feeling much better - he’s not needed any painkillers for the last two days and is showing no signs of stiffness or restricted movement. He’s not at all stoic so it’s very obvious when he’s not right...

My worry is that when he’s allowed off lead he’s going to be so excited he’s going to hare around like a loon and end up injuring himself again.. any top tips on keeping him calm(ish) for his first few walks?

Not sure how you keep a newly off lead dog calm, but I suspect I would build up to it with some longer on lead walks first.
