We currently have a vow polo and use a back seat cover. PizzaPup is not great in the car but is ok in the dog walker van. Dh thinks we should get an estate so we can put her in the boot with someone in the back seat at all times keeping her company. Getting an estate would mean we could try putting a crate in the boot to see if she handles that better.

What car do you have?

Ford Expedition EL, a dog guard behind the 3rd Row gives the dogs plenty of space. Plus we can still seat 8

I don't have a suggestion of car but if you look on safedog they have crash tested crates and tell you which cars the fit in and sizes.

vw Golf but would look at a Passat next as father has one and it's perfect for their cocker. Plenty of space for her to stretch out plus room for a bit of luggage back there too.

A Civic (newest model or even the past two or three previous ones)! Great boot and passenger space, but manageable overall dimensions.
We had the 2006 model a few years back and it was my favourite car ever (had super smart rear seats too that you could lift up, sadly not in the current model due to some changes in the rear suspension setup). Had another smaller hatch for the past 4 years and just bought the new Civic two months ago. Boot fits our golden in her crate and plenty of luggage. The boot is quite low to the ground too which is great since the golden is getting older.
Kids (2 teens) and the jrt in her crate (medium soft crate) fit nicely in the back seat.

Kia Ceed estate fitted with a Barjo tailgate guard.
Can fit three labs for short journeys and house two comfortably at all-day competitions
