Greyhound (14) off legs

MariaWaria · 20/01/2018 22:07

She's a gentle soul who usually spends her days lazing around as all good greys do. Yet a few months ago her back legs seemed to go wobbly and she was struggling to stand. One of her ankles seemed swollen but after a few hours of rest she was more or less okay and after a few days was able to go on short walks again.

Now its happened again though worse; this time its a front leg that seems to be troubling her though can't see any injury or swelling. She can't stand at all. Neighbour had to pick her up off the floor and lay her on the sofa which I have covered in towels etc as she's not going to be able to go anywhere to toilet.

Not sure what to do if she's not mobile tomorrow. Couldn't get her to the vet in the state she's in. And can't have her toiletting on the sofa long term. Now she's on the sofa she seems comfortable and is dozing; hasn't needed a wee yet. Doesn't seem in pain though one front leg seems sensitive.

Advice, please.

She needs to see a vet. Would they come out or do they offer a collection service? (If you could help to lift her into a van.)
TBH I would call an emergency vet if she can't stand at all.

BatFaceGal · 20/01/2018 23:15

Poor old girl. This sounds like it could be her time. Please call the vet ASAP and don't prolong this. She is unable to stand to toilet so that's an indicator that it's time to do the right thing by her

rightsaidfrederickII · 21/01/2018 10:41

Vets asap... Most will do home visits in these circumstances

MariaWaria · 21/01/2018 19:20

The vet wasn't able to come out today but managed to get her to vet. She's been PTS. Very sad but the right thing to do. Thanks for the kindness and wise worrds. The house seems so empty without her.

Very sorry to hear you've lost your girl, greyhounds are just the best (slightly biased greyhound owner here).

Oh Maria I'm so sorry Thanks I lost my greyhound boy in very similar circumstances a year ago. He was 12 and lost the use of his back end, it happened so suddenly (although he had been a bit wobbly on his back legs for a while before that). It was awful to see him suffering, he was such a dignified dog and it broke my heart to see him unable to toilet without help (me lifting his back end with a towel) to help him stand long enough to go. Thankfully the vet came out to the house as he was a very large greyhound and I wouldn't have been able to get him into the car without distressing him. He was pts very gently on his bed and surrounded by our love. I miss him so much and there will never be a day that I don't miss him for the rest of my life, but I'm so very thankful for the wonderful years he gave me and feel truly blessed to have had him in my life.

I'm so so sorry to hear that. Greyhounds are indeed amazing pets and companions.

MariaWaria · 22/01/2018 20:33

More thanks for your kind words and thoughts. Sorry to hear that you have had this experience too yes

I'm glad my lovely girl is no longer suffering. The vet and nurse were very kind and she wasn't frightened; just drifted away very quickly.

I hadn't realised how much I loved her Sad

Another greyhound lover here, am so sorry for your loss. She will have known how much you loved her and that's the important thing.
