General dog chat

Anyone fancy a general dog chat thread?

BiteyDog is now almost 15 months old and it's about time we ditched the puppy survival thread for general chit chat but it's still nice to chat about our doggie dilemmas and days so if anyone wants to join me in wittering on saves BiteyDog having the listen to my incessant talking at him then welcome aboard.

How's all the dogs coping with the snow in the northern parts? I am sick of the rain and I guess fortunate enough that BiteyDog doesn't like it much either so apart from a 20 min ball run we are snuggled up in the house today.

Hope you break the obsessive licking. At one point (because BiteyDog could not have his cone on due to him trying to destroy it) I had his head in an armlock type hug to try to break the licking habit.

Bloody dogs, you love them but boy they can raise your stress levels Grin

Do they ever? I really can't start the bandaging at the vets lark again. She looks most fetching in her pink sock. Bloody dogs.
Good job I love her to bits.

steppemum · 29/01/2018 11:35

Oh wolfie, what a nightmare.
Can she wear the muzzle for 15 minute slots eg when you need a shower, or while you cook dinner etc?

Wolfiefan · 29/01/2018 12:45

I feel bad enough leaving it on overnight. But she may have to. Sad

DeepfriedPizza · 29/01/2018 14:59

Poor Wolfieup. Hopefully Doc Mcstuffin helps

BiteyShark · 30/01/2018 05:27

Oh dear clearly BiteyDog must have eaten something he shouldn't have as we have the poos this morning.

How's WolfieDog coping with her sock?

Soubriquet · 30/01/2018 07:08

wish there was something like this here Grin

Hope wolfie pup is feeling better and poor biteypup. Have you got any pro-kaolin? I always give madam some if she has the runs and it helps a lot

BiteyShark · 30/01/2018 07:14

Stacks of pro kaolin in the house from when we had this everyday. Going to see if we get another episode and then will dose him up. Fortunately he has been so well recently I have forgotten what it's like for him to have a poorly belly.

Ha love the doggy bus Grin

Soubriquet · 30/01/2018 07:32

I must say, since madam has been on raw, we've had no more bottom explosions.

Her poop is lovely solid and small. Very little smell from it too. Only dog people talk like this Grin

She's also lived the life of luxury the last couple of days. We had beef for Sunday roast and my Dh cut all the fat and gristle from the meat, with quite a bit of meat still attached.

She's been having her usual complete raw food for breakfast to make sure it's a complete diet and then for tea she's had raw beef, carrot peelings and green beans. She's wolfed the lot down! Got enough for one more meal tonight.

BiteyShark · 30/01/2018 07:45

Soubriquet our dogs eat better than we do Grin. Think I am coming to yours for dinner.

It seems to be anything fatty that BiteyDog can't handle so he has a decent wet food and dry biscuits only now. I am a little concerned about his illness last year as the thing that was suggested (but no diagnosis as that would have required stomach samples and he had recovered by that time) might also be triggered by stress and we had been on holiday for 2 weeks so going to be watching him like a hawk after our next holiday away from him later in the year.

Soubriquet · 30/01/2018 07:48

Bless him. It's awful when you can't help.

My old dog Nero, was allergic to rice, wheat, chicken, grass and a few other bits and pieces.

Everytime he got something he shouldn't, he would have a major explosion Hmm

Used to end up on fish4dogs and that was it. Was the only food he could eat without tummy problems. Unfortunately he was a scavenger and would always get stuff he shouldn't

Wolfiefan · 30/01/2018 08:04

Got up this morning and two of her toes were stuck together. Sad I'm going to try bathing in saline and get some apple cider vinegar. Failing that it will be back to the vet.
Tried a pair of boxers on her last night to try and stop the mess from the season. She was NOT impressed!

BiteyShark · 30/01/2018 08:06

Sad paws take so long to heal.

Soubriquet · 30/01/2018 08:09

You've reminded me of my nana old dog.

She had a cocker I think, that came into season. They also had a male dog. So they stuck a pair of knickers on the female and shut the male in a different room at night.

Came down the next morning to the female dog laid there with the knickers around her ankles and the male dog sat there with the biggest grin ever on his face.

My grandad nearly pissed himself laughing.

BiteyShark · 30/01/2018 08:21

Soubriquet oooops ShockGrin

Poor Wolfie girl. She certainly is high maintainance. Mine is too so you have my sympathies.

Still not happy with Bluepuppy’s weight. He gets good quality food and more than the recommended amount but still looks skinnier than I’m happy with. He is very high energy and certainly looks and acts healthy. I do wonder is his anxiety is part of the problem.

Most recommendations to put weight on whippets involve raw mince and I’m reluctant to feed him that after a vet told me it might have caused his bout of bloody diarhearra when he was younger.

At least I don’t have seasons and phantom pregnancies to worry about.

bluetongue · 30/01/2018 09:27

Forgot to mention he is up to date with worming so that’s not his issue.

Wolfiefan · 30/01/2018 09:51

Could you add a supplement to add weight?

bluetongue · 30/01/2018 10:06

Not sure Wolfie.

Think I’ll see what he’s like after I get back from holidays in March and consider if it’s worth a vet trip. It’s not uncommon for young whippets to be a bit ribby. If he seemed at all lethargic or unwell I’d be off to the vet tomorrow but he’s honestly bursting out of his skin with energy.

BiteyShark · 30/01/2018 10:44

Hmm thought it was too good to be true thinking the poos might be a one off incident. The pro kolin has been bought out Grin

blue he's probably just burning up all the energy being young and active. He also goes to daycare doesn't he which I think we underestimate how much they tend to be on the go there when they have the company of their doggy friends to run about with.

OP posts:
bluetongue · 30/01/2018 10:53

He’s been to daycare all day today and is exhausted. For the past couple of weeks he’s had an extra day at daycare due to me having to work extra hours.

I forgot to mention that I did discuss his weight to his behaviour vet last month and she didn’t seem too concerned.

At the whippet gathering I go to there are definitely some that seem naturally more solid, even from a young age and others that are well, Whippet thin Grin

Soubriquet · 30/01/2018 11:07

Everytime he has an explosion are you starving him for 24 hours before introducing food back into his system?

BiteyShark · 30/01/2018 11:23

Soubriquet I don't starve him as that hasn't helped in the past and feeding him bland food like chicken and rice made it worse rather than better during his previous bouts. The vet has in the past said to feed small but more regular meals of his normal food to try and maintain his normal gut bacteria. I'm not too worried about this at the moment as I think it's just normal upset stomach rather than a return to his illness and he is going at his usual times rather than needing to go more frequently iykwim Grin but it's just a shame as he has been so good and actually recently put 1kg of weight on so you can no longer see his ribs protruding.

MsHomeSlice · 30/01/2018 12:32

little and often ties in with advice from managing an ongoing colitis thing we had with one of our GSDs....that went on for forever!! ...a good couple of months, if not three+ ....just when you thought it was done back to terrible slimy diarrhoea

Chicken and rice suited him though, it was a change of food that seemed to do the trick, and very slow change over.

BiteyShark · 30/01/2018 12:55

MsHomeSlice yes he had severe vomiting and diarrhoea for several weeks and was hospitalised for a lot of that. At one point I was feeding him 10 times a day which felt like I was constantly getting the food tin out but we are happily back to twice a day Grin

Fortunately that episode was only weeks, think I would have cried if it had been months.
