General dog chat

Anyone fancy a general dog chat thread?

BiteyDog is now almost 15 months old and it's about time we ditched the puppy survival thread for general chit chat but it's still nice to chat about our doggie dilemmas and days so if anyone wants to join me in wittering on saves BiteyDog having the listen to my incessant talking at him then welcome aboard.

How's all the dogs coping with the snow in the northern parts? I am sick of the rain and I guess fortunate enough that BiteyDog doesn't like it much either so apart from a 20 min ball run we are snuggled up in the house today.

Teatimetoller has been referred to a neurologist - rest didn’t help and he screamed when he got into the car today 😕

The vet thinks it’s a nerve problem as he reacted to one particular stimulus but he’ll need an MRI to confirm

The good news is he can go off lead again as rest wasn’t making any difference so he will be happier at least and he’s got a two-week supply of painkillers

Thankfully he’s insured - I suspect this is going to be expensive....

BiteyShark · 22/02/2018 20:25

noitsnotteatimeyet poor Teatimetoller, hope the painkillers do the trick until you get to see the specialist.

noitsnotteatimeyet · 23/02/2018 08:02

Thanks @BiteyShark - most of the time he’s very cheerful but there’s obviously something ‘catching’ every now and then which is causing a lot of pain, but until last night’s appointment the vet hadn’t been able to isolate the source.

It’s funny, I’m so much less gung-ho with teatimetoller - with the kids it’s “I’m sure you’ll be fine in the morning but if it’s really bad take a painkiller” but the dog can’t tell me what’s wrong so I worry ...

BiteyShark · 23/02/2018 08:46

Same here, I put off going to the doctors a lot but quite happy to take the dog to the vets if I am not sure what's wrong.

We have an off belly again (sloppy poos). Hoping it's all out his system now but will keep an eye on him.

Oh, just picked up more stuff for steppedogs ears,
£26 for the antibiotic drops and £14 for the ear wash.

I nearly fainted.
Sigh, that was on top of the £46 to get the sample sent off. He has sore ears and we can't shift it, after every set of drops it comes back, so this time she suggested sending it off to identify the bug. Good idea I said (gulp)

Let's hope this knocks it on the head.

BiteyShark · 24/02/2018 00:56

steppemum it would be nice if they could pinpoint the bug and finally stop it.

Well BiteyDog is 16 months and I have generally been fighting fit since we got him but now have what I have been dreading, a streaming head cold and I feel like shit. Sad always thought when you are ill that's when having to get up and still care for dog and take them walks and training is a pain when all you want to do is curl up and stay in bed and feel sorry for yourself. I can't sleep as my throat is sore and I am the snot monster. On top of that BiteyDogs stomach still isn't right. Tomorrow is going to be fun not.

BiteyShark · 24/02/2018 01:44

Oh joy, BiteyDog has just vomited last nights dinner up. Eeeek really hope this isn't the start of his illness he had last year again as he isn't a vomity dog and this is how he started then. Well I guess that means training is out then tomorrow for both of us.

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 24/02/2018 02:22

Oh poor BiteyDog, vomiting again (lots) Sad

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 24/02/2018 07:06

Going to phone vets when they open. He doesn't want any food, not drinking and isn't himself. I have had no sleep worrying about him, he hasn't had any with my sniffing and coughing.

Abhorsen · 24/02/2018 07:44

Hope bitey is ok, it’s awful when you feel ill as well - everything just feels so much harder.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 24/02/2018 08:01

Poor you and poor biteydog💐 It is good though that he gives you clear signs when he is unwell so you can act fast. Coco still ate well and acted relatively normally when she had a stomach infection a few weeks ago, was only when she started messing overnight and the smell☹️ of it that alerted me something must be up.

noitsnotteatimeyet · 24/02/2018 08:08

Poor BiteyDog and poor you - hope you both feel better soon.

Teatimetoller is booked in to see the neurologist next Thursday, however I’ve realised that my bastarding insurance company has changed their terms and conditions - they will now only pay a maximum of £750 for any MRI or CT scans (not even half the cost ... Angry) and I’d better hope that he doesn’t ever need a cruciate repair as they have decided only to pay £750 for that too. What’s really annoying is they changed the policy after I’d already had it for two years and now we’re stuck with them....

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 24/02/2018 09:21

Hope BiteyDog feels better soon Sad

Which insurance company are you with Teatime? I bet they're still charging you the same premiums! Speak to the vet and let them know the situation with your insurance so that they are a bit more conservative with which scans they say are necessary.

I think this is the most ridiculous dog accessory I've seen in a while - the lead / umbrella combo, for dogs that don't like to go out in the rain www.animalattire.net/product-page/umbrella-lead

BiteyShark · 24/02/2018 09:49

Totally outs self but never mind We have medication for the weekend and assuming he doesn't deteriorate and needs further treatment rendering investigations void, he will be admitted on Monday for an endoscopy so they can try and work out why he was ill last year and looking like he's going the same way again.

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 24/02/2018 10:14

AvocadosBeforeMortgages my dog would be ringing rspca if I tried to put him in some of those products Grin

noitsnotteatimeyet that's unfair to change the policy Sad

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 24/02/2018 16:56

The medication has worked, he is drinking and eating small amounts every hour. Just got to get him to Monday when I have the awful thing of having to leave him again at the vets. It will break my heart as he will think I am not coming back for him like last time. I really hope we find an IBS thingy and he can just have steroids forever to keep it in check.

Poor BiteyDog and TeatimeToller Sad Hope they are OK this morning.

I managed to put SquirrelDog’s harness on wrong 3 TIMES this morning for his walk. I wondered why he was being uncharacteristically sedate, then I realised I’d basically tied up one of his front legs. Grin

BiteyShark · 25/02/2018 11:24

Awww poor squirrelDog. He was probably sat there thinking how on earth does she expect me to walk in this Grin.

BiteyDog has certainly perked up for food and drink (we are feeding him small amounts every hour) but seems a bit more tired than usual. Trying not to think about tomorrow but I knew we would have to do this when if it occurred again as the only reason they didn't do it last time is that he had just started to perk up after being very ill for three weeks so no one including us wanted to put him through any more.

JaimeLannister · 25/02/2018 15:46

I hate leaving them at the vets. Feels like such betrayal when you hand over the lead and walk away.

Hope the poorly dogs feel better soon.

Had a good walk this morning with YoungGoldie. He actually came away from playing with other dogs 3 times when I called him! It was a fluke I'm sure, he will be back to being a deaf teenager tomorrow!

noitsnotteatimeyet · 25/02/2018 18:22

Poor teatimetoller is feeling very sorry for himself - he had a lovely walk this morning followed by a scent work class so nothing very physically taxing but mentally exhausting. He’d been asleep most of the afternoon but that’s not unusual after training. However, when he got up to go to the garden for a wee he yelped and he’s obviously not happy - went straight back to bed. We’ve given him the maximum dose of the painkiller the vet gave us and fingers crossed he feels a bit more comfortable soon

Good luck tomorrow at the vets biteydog

BiteyShark · 25/02/2018 18:39

Thanks for the good wishes. BiteyDog is currently curled up on our spare bed fast asleep.

Poor teatimetoller, seeing them in pain is awful. I really wish we could speak 'dog' so they understand.

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 25/02/2018 18:43

JaimeLannister maybe he's starting to listen again. I found BiteyDog just started behaving more and more with recall and it was so hard not to get excited when he came back but he did get lots of treats Grin

OP posts:
AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 25/02/2018 19:19

PestDog and I were out for 7 hours today, including two hours in Hyde Park.

By the time we got to the dog-friendly vegan fried chicken shop (even the bacon is vegan) he was so tired he was visibly drooping. I only realised he was asleep while sat up when I tried to feed him a chip as a special treat and it took him a good 10 seconds to notice what was an inch in front of his nose Grin

Unsurprisingly, he's now passed out on my bed Grin

BiteyShark · 25/02/2018 20:22

Sounds like PestDog is one very tired happy dog Grin

Sending recovery wishes for biteydog and teatimetoller😀
Cocodog spent first night and only one night in kennels on Friday, her usual home boarder couldn’t take her and we had sons engagement party .Came home and panted a lot, seemed very stressed , we got her to relax on sofa with us for a while and then took her for shortish walk through the woods. She relaxed as the evening wore on and was fine overnight. Today has been very hyper on walks but again settling well this evening. DH and I have decided that kennels are a no no for her, our other dogs in the past seemed way more stoic...or are we just getting better at reading dog?
