Does crushing tablet affect effectiveness?

I have a dog that hates taking worming tablets.
I tried wrapping it with ham, smother it with cheese or peanut butter, throw it in the air for him to catch so he thinks it's a treat. All with no success.
He will spit it out.
I now resort to crushing it with water and then administer it with a syringe and holding his head up.
Does crushing it affect its effectiveness?

Have always been told by pharmacist its best to swallow whole so wondering if same principles apply for pets.

I just put the tablet to the very back on the throat with my finger tips and then close and hold dogs mouth shut. It forces a swallow reflex and the tablet is gone! Best advice every from the vet. NB don’t try this with a bitey dog

Get one of the pill giving gadgets , it enables you to get the pill to the back of the throat and then releases it so there’s not a lot they can do about it . We have one for my mums cat who is a complete git with pills . Our dog will eat anything if it’s wrapped in meat .

My understanding is that it can if the tablet is designed to be slow release as it is with some painkillers.

I think it will say on the packaging how the tablets are best given and it's best to follow that.

Some drugs can have weird side effects or make humans and animals quite unwell if they're absorbed too quickly which is why you get a pressed tablet with a coating on it. The dosage is calculated to be digested at the right speed.

We ended up buying a pill popper (looks weirdly like an icing syringe) - one of us wraps the dog in a towel and holds him still, the other pops his mouth open, pushes the pill popper as far back as possible (without choking him) and squeezes. Then he quickly gets a good mouthful of cheese or ham to encourage him to swallow properly just in case!

The Drontal tablet is too big anyway so I have to break it in half. He has a small mouth.
Already tried shuffling half a tablet to the back of the throat.
Success rate is like 1 in 6.

Even if im successful with one. I still have another half a tablet to go.
He tries to bring the tablet out and the tablet breaks up in to smaller pieces and it gets even harder getting him to swallow lots of small pieces.

What I have done in the past is have lots of bits of food (cooked chicken, cheese etc) and quickly feed him those in succession. Half way through one of those pieces will have the tablet in but before he has registered he has a tablet in his mouth I feed him another non tablet bit and he is so eager to eat that he swollows the previous one containing the tablet. Hard to explain so hope you get what I mean.

Apparently some brands of worming treatment are available as liquid or paste now, might be worth checking with your vet to see if there's a suitable one?

When I administer a pill by mouth I put it in a small ball of food and pop that right at the back of the tongue. It's less aversive than a bare pill.
Milbemax is a reasonably palatable brand, more so than chalky Drontal.
If you use Revolution or Advocate spot ons, they will do most of your deworming for you as well as fleas (Rev does ticks too). Neither cover tapeworms though.
Dectomax or Ivomec injections are (off-label) deworming options but are not suitable for most collies or collie crosses.

Do this but also, holding dog's mouth shut, tip muzzle upwards and stroke the dog's throat and this stimulates the swallowing and makes it pretty impossible for the dog to chuck out the pill. (Also pill should be in the middle of the very back of the mouth when you place it)

If it's too big - is that because it's a palatable one? If so they're designed to be chewed, so they should be fine to crush.

Have you tried the trick of wrapping it in a treat like you said but first you play training for treats or games for treats, giving the real untampered treats when they win. Get them all excited and non-suspecting and then, when they are taking them and gobbling the treats down, nonchalantly sneak the tampered one to them. They won't be expecting it so will be less likely to sniff first and refuse because of the intruder inside
