Dog racism? (light-hearted)

We have noticed that pizzapup often has dogs come up to her and snarl or growl. Pizzapup is on lead all the time and these dogs are usually off lead.
Dh jokes that because pizzapup is an immigrant (light-hearted) they are picking on her for that.

Do dogs pick on other dogs intentionally?

I think some dogs do give off a 'vibe' that others don't like.
Mine tend to bark at dogs that seem to be a bit standoffish or if they look scary.

Bulldogs and pugs also confuse mine Smile

DeepfriedPizza · 04/01/2018 14:24

PizzaPup is anxious most of the time so maybe they don’t like that vibe?

I met a small dog a couple of weeks ago, whos owner told me his absolutely fine with every dog they meet except golden Labradors. Any other color labrador is fine, just not golden. He also told me his never been attacked by one or anything so he cant understand why he dislikes them so much.

UrsulaPandress · 04/01/2018 14:35

Saw on a rescue site a black cocker that was fine with every dog except black cockers.

Meepmoop · 04/01/2018 14:45

I've read a few times that dogs with black areas around the eyes tend to cause a reaction in other dogs as they can't see their eyes properly

babyblackbird · 04/01/2018 17:21

It will be because she's nervous and the other dogs will be sensing that as they interact and it will unsettle other dogs. My nervous dog can be a bit cack handed when he meets others and that makes them sometimes react negatively to him.

Ylvamoon · 04/01/2018 20:23

Grin I like this... My dogs have always been ok with others but I did own a rescue dog once that absolutely hated people wearing hoodies! She used to follow them (safe distance) barking and growling. It was than my job to rescue her by grabbing her by the collar pulling her to safety. The odd thing was, she would jump around and try and lick my fac withtail wagging like she hadn't seen me in days! (I think she was relieved ...)

ChristinaParsons · 04/01/2018 20:27

My dog hates any black or yellow dogs. Its a family joke that we own a racist dog. But we may not be alone

hometownunicorn · 04/01/2018 21:14

My dog doesn't seem to like black labs, although he's better with them off lead. Our vet said that it's really common for dogs to hate black labs. Dogs are weird Confused

ChristinaParsons · 04/01/2018 21:16

Indeed they are. Our racist dogs best friend is a black lab

JaimeLannister · 04/01/2018 21:18

My old dog hated dogs with beards.

burgen · 04/01/2018 21:30

My old dog loved every dog. Except black dogs. He hated black dogs. Didn't matter if they were big or small, boys or girls. If they were black he tried to hurt them. Then after he had an unfortunate incident with a liver and white springer spaniel trying to rape him he never liked another liver and white spaniel again

DeepfriedPizza · 05/01/2018 10:56

PizzaPup is indifferent to all dogs. She's never reacted (in friendly terms or other wise) to any dogs regardless of their colour. Dogs are strange

My dog doesn't seem to know how to deal with small dogs, he just stands and stares at them if they come up to him

tabulahrasa · 05/01/2018 11:54

Dogs communicate a huge amount by body language and dogs that are anxious or have poor dog social skills give off dodgy signals - it's not as vague as giving off a vibe, it's that they're throwing off body language signals that tell another dog something is 'off'

Jasmin82 · 05/01/2018 14:42

Resident collie loves all dogs. Except big, fluffy GSD's that might bark at her. She has to get her bark in first, just in case, to let them know that, they might be bigger than her, but she's tougher than them. The only big, fluffy GSD she likes is the one that lives at the kennels we use. She likes him.
