Good introductory dog book?

Has anyone got any recommendations for a book about dog ownership? Covering things like sourcing a dog, modern dog feeding, etc

It would be for someone who is considering getting a dog now he's retired. Grew up with dogs so not totally clueless, but modern ways of doing things seem to have escaped him, perhaps more than he realises.

I found this book really useful. It's quite general so he'll probably need an extra book on training etc but it talks though a lot of issues (raw feeding/positive training/whether to vaccinate/considering a rescue dog) which have changed a lot since I had a dog as a child.
