So dog bit someone 😓

The other day my dog bit someone's finger. Badly.
She's a cockapoo and five years old very much a beloved dog.
Like many dogs she doesn't like the post or the letterbox. A man who'd cleaned the bins pushed a miniscule piece of paper through the door and she ran at at barking. His finger was right through and holding the paper she jumped up and bit him.
She's normally nowhere near the porch. I moved to my
Mums as I've fled an abusive relationship. I've just had a baby and it's chaos. The only reason the porch door was open is that
My ex refused to let womens aid take the cats and dumped them here. Their litter tray is in the porch so we need to leave the door open. So a perfect storm of factors.

Anyway he came back two days after the bite to tell me that his finger might be infected he could lose it and his business. That he was being pushed by the hospital to report it.
I cleaned his hand throughly, washed it through with tcp and applied Avalon plus a gauze. Told him to go straight to a & e as it was bleeding heavily.

This has been an awful few
Months for me and i can't believe this has happened.
She's a beautiful dog and spends all day with us as a family. She is insured her hand are
Up to date her teeth are teguglarly checked and she's walked every day.

Has anyone been in this hellish situation?
I'm resigned to the fact she'll be destroyed which is breaking my heart as she's got me through some awful days the last few months.

How will this be resolved?
Will I get a criminal record?
I've no money to pay a fine. I dont have any savings or a job and just had a tiny baby.

Going out of my mind with worry and any advice would be most welcomed

I wouldn't think the dog will suffer for this as it will be seen as the dog protecting its territory

He's probably looking for compensation. Don't pay him anything

However do buy a wire post box to go over the letterbox to stop this happening again

lollipop7 · 21/11/2017 10:46

Have ordered a wire post box and arranged a dog trainer to come for a two hour visit. I will also get some advice from her about a muzzle

I've just checked his company retrima and it's hardly Alan sugar so I'm not sure what he's saying he's lose int was of earnings. It was only 4K last financial year.

And as you say reporting the dog doesn't equal compensation

Just have to sit tight I think he'll be back

You won't need a muzzle if it's not normal for your dog to bite.

Look at it this way. Hand comes in the letter box, dog barks, snarls and snaps, the hand goes away. Territory defended.

He then learns to do this every time, which is why dogs tend to bark at people going by the window. In their mind, their barking is keeping people away.

So all your dog was doing was telling that hand to back off, it's her house. The hand didn't lesson so got a bite

Not good I know, but in her eyes she did the right thing. With your letter box guard, it shouldnt happen again

Get a mental list together to say to him.

By tough and not friendly. Be clear that he should not have put his hand in, that he should have gone to A&E, point out that if his finger was so bad he was goign to lose it then he would be in hospital on an IV drip, and call his bluff:

I think you are angling for money. I was not born yesterday. You will not be getting money, please do not come back.

Whitney168 · 21/11/2017 13:37

You won't need a muzzle if it's not normal for your dog to bite.

There is never any guarantee any dog won't bite. If I knew that I would no longer have any third party insurance available to me, I would personally rather know that I wasn't going to lose my house being sued if anything unfortunate did ever happen.

randomer · 21/11/2017 13:44

There's something not right here. He is bitten so returns to the house and you dress the wound? Surely that's why we have doctors and hospitals?

randomer · 21/11/2017 13:47

Pushed by the hospital to report it is rubbish. They have better things to do.

His defo after some
Cash

From what I read the man put his hand through you Letter box and your dog bit it.?

This isn't a dangerous dog it's a stupid man I would go with a letter box cage though.
