I'm not counting it up!!
It is very strong at 50/50. Not sure it's not too strong. Eek.

Think I've found madams new favourite treat. It's certainly keeping her quiet. It's a chicken foot!

Hello everybody, we are new to this thread having just come home yesterday afternoon... thought we better stop by and say hi as we may need the support in the coming months!
So far so good, and night 1 we slept 10:30pm until 7am with no crying... can't quite believe our luck. I'm sure it can't possibly last 😂😂

Super cute Bass Smile. Do you have two little ones at once?

bluetongue · 18/12/2017 13:32

I try not to think of the money Bitey! I’ve had to start find areas to economise on. He still gets his ‘good’ food but I will need to start shopping around or see if bigger bags are more economical.

He used to get bought expensive bags of treats but he seems just as happy with broken up scmackos or tiny cubes of cheese. No more expensive dog toys either for a while. Luckily he loves treats in taped up cardboard boxes or in egg cartons. Being summer here I’ve also take to making up doggy iceblocks and freezing kongs..

Wolfiefan · 18/12/2017 14:09

I've saved a fortune in dog treats since buying a dehydrator! She loves dried liver or chicken.

BiteyShark · 18/12/2017 16:19

I looked at my amazon account and it's a shock on how much i've spent on BiteyDog. The depressing part is probably only about 50% of what I bought has been any good :( Lots were just hype or didn't last longer than 2 minutes.

Hi BassAce sounds like things have started well Grin

MrsTWH · 18/12/2017 16:43

Look at all those scrummy puppies!! Grin

Right now I think I have a dog who is half dog, half piranha...! How do you teach them not to grab your clothes and tug??!

CornflakeHomunculus · 18/12/2017 16:58

@BassAce it's not unusual for pups to be a bit shell shocked when they first arrive in their new homes and then

The Dog Training Advice and Support FB group has lots of good puppy related advice, they have a collection of guides/articles specifically aimed at new puppy owners.

If you haven't already (and apologies if you have) I'd recommend doing some research into "littermate syndrome", presuming both the pups are yours. The aforementioned FB group have an article on the subject and has further links worth reading at the end. Having two pups is more than double the work of one. They need to be walked, trained, played with and socialised separately as well as together, plus it's a good idea for them to spend some of their down time at home apart as well. Taking them to separate puppy classes would also be far better than taking both to the same one.

I also recommend this website to anyone with (or considering) dachshunds, it's got loads of great advice about IVDD and the lifestyle choices you can make to reduce the risks of spinal issues as much as possible for your dogs.

May I join??

I’m a dog trainer but rather like a professional Nanny or Schoolteacher who finds its very different with their offspring, I’ve failed miserably in many ways with my 8 month old Terrier and find myself doing things I’d NEVER advise clients to do ☺️😁

BiteyShark · 18/12/2017 18:07

Welcome JRTerrorist . Can I confess I feel slightly better when one of the trainers dogs doesn't do exactly what they want Grin

JRTerrorist · 18/12/2017 18:19

Lol! They’re sentient beings not robots 🤖 🐕

But don’t get me wrong - there’s always a way to get them to behave how you want and there is ALWAYS a kind way.

My downfall with my own pup is that I think he’s hilarious when he’s being a little shit ☺️

Also I love that he’s so inventive and busy - it makes him a joy to train. It also means I could cheerfully throttle him with my bare hands on a daily basis 😏

Fannyfanakerpants · 18/12/2017 20:30

Hello. We haves lab X joining our family soon. I saw up the thread a bit, a lab x in a harness. I've tried researching but I'm very confused about harnesses for puppies. They seem a bit more ethical to me but how do I know what to buy for a growing puppy?

JRTerrorist · 18/12/2017 20:35

Personally I far prefer harnesses - ideally with a front attachment like the Mekuti or Perfect Fit.

BiteyShark · 18/12/2017 20:46

I think the problem is that there are lots of different harnesses that suit different dogs. I tried a couple but my wriggly dog would not step into them so I ended up with an ezydog quick fit harness which I could get on him before he had time to run away Grin

GooodMythicalMorning · 18/12/2017 20:50

Harness for my bulldog but mainly as I was worried about accidentally choking him just with the collar and lead.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 18/12/2017 20:52

I'm not sure a harness would fit Wolfiepup! I have a leather collar and a dogmatic for when I need ultimate control!!

BiteyShark · 18/12/2017 20:57

I swop between harness and collar depending on what we are doing. If we are just going out to run about I think harnesses are uncomfortable and would catch on things for my dog as he runs at full speed so it's a collar and slip lead for quick on and off. For trotting about in town then it's a harness.

Wolfiefan · 18/12/2017 21:13

Oh and I have a slip lead for showing!

CornflakeHomunculus · 18/12/2017 21:25

Fanny I'd go for a fairly basic harness with plenty of room for adjustment initially then get him a "proper" harness when he's not growing quite so fast. The Dog Games Fleece Lined Harness is good and pretty adjustable. I also really rate the stuff from Indi-Dog and their new Vai-Fit harnesses look like they could be great for a growing pup.

I'm not keen on collars and don't use them at all for my dogs, they just have harnesses. Technically the law does state you should have their ID tag attached to a collar but mine just have theirs on their harnesses. I'm happy to take the (I believe incredibly small) risk I might get into any sort of bother over it Grin

JRTerrorist · 18/12/2017 21:47

I intend to splash out on a Perfect Fit harness when JR has stopped growing 😁
