Whining at treat cupboard

Im looking for some advice. I have treats at the back door to treat outside toiletting (boy dog is far too happy to pee inside if he gets the chance). Trouble is, he will whine in the evening at the treats. We are backwards and forwards all night to back door to check if he needs the toilet, but it ends up being he wants a treat. He doesn’t get treated if he’s not gone outside for a pee, but it’s annoying.

What are we doing wrong? Is he hungry? He’s perfect weight. Any ideas to tackle the whining?

Give him a Kong or long lasting treat to shut him up all evening!!

Ha! Thank you. I totally forgot about kongs! He had bad separation anxiety when he was young and he didn’t (still won’t) eat food or treats unless we are home and he’s happy we’re not going anywhere. Thanks for the reminder- I’ll get onto that.

Move the treats?

I gave up treating Elfpup for weeing outside as it was counterproductive. We made much more progress then. He just gets a bit of praise now.

I will try that too. Thank you.
