Feed once or twice a day

Is it ok to feed just once a day? My dog sometimes just isn’t up for breakfast and leaves half or sometimes all of it.
She has 3 20-30 minutes walks a day I feed her about half an hour after her morning walk and about an hour before her last walk of the day. She absolutely wolfs down her evening food but on a morning she just doesn’t seem as bothered.
Would it be bad to only feed once on an evening? I don’t like the idea of her having an empty stomach all day though.

I think some people feed once a day but I would be worried about mine feeling hungry especially when he is active during the day. Could you experiment with feeding say 30% in the morning and 70% in the evening so he gets a bit for breakfast but isn't staring at a massive bowl if he isn't that hungry.

That’s a good idea I never thought of feeding a smaller portion in the morning, duhhh don’t know why. We use pouches and a measuring cup for dry food so that’ll be easy to do.
Thank you.

If dog is healthy and active then one meal a day is fine. No point in trying to make him eat breakfast if he doesn't want it.
A lot of dogs only get fed once a day.

If it's kibble, does it matter if it gets left out all day? PestDog isn't a morning dog and sometimes won't eat all of his breakfast kibble before dinner, but I think he appreciates having the option

My dog has 2 meals a day but the food is split so he has just kibble in the morning and kibble + whatever he is having on top ( fish / eggs / meat) in the evening . So in effect he has 1/3 in the morning and 2/3 for tea . My mum has elderly dogs and one can only eat small meals or he vomits so she is back to feeding 3 x a day again just tiny meals each time .

It’s kibble mixed with half a wet pouch. In her last home she had kibble left out 24/7 so consequently she won’t eat it on its own at all. She’s so fussy.
I will definitely try just a small amount in the morning and then a bigger meal in the evening.

It’s not great to feed your dog before exercise so personally I think that’s the first thing you should change

I always feed my dogs raw. At the age of my puppy now she’s on twice a day, but like my old dog, she will eventually go down to once a day in the evening.

As you feed kibble there’s not really any harm leaving it out.

Mol1628 · 18/11/2017 14:00

She’s fed 30/40 minutes after her morning walk and about an hour before her evening walk, so not really feeding right before or after exercise.
And the kibble is mixed in with wet.
I don’t want to feed raw but thank you for your input.

Ours is so stuck in his routine I don't think he'd let us feed him less than 3 times a day lol.

Kellyfgp · 19/11/2017 08:10

Twice a day for mine once they reach 6months before that 4 times then down to 3 etc I feed raw :)
