Started my own thread as feel awful keep bringing the puppy survival thread down with my woes.

So bought him home from the vets tonight which was a massive mistake. Started vomiting again so we have just done a dash back to the emergency vets for an anti-sickness injection.

Held off admitting him again as I think they will have no choice but to open him up and look around all of his abdomen next week and selfishly I want to spend some time with him before they do that.

Second mistake was not readmitting him as the injection hasn't stopped it. Going to take him back first thing and let them look after him for the rest of the weekend. I keep thinking did I give him too much to eat too soon? But he's vomiting liquid and not food Sad

It's heartbreaking to see him in so much discomfort. I would rather it was me that was ill Sad The poor boy has had more exams and scans than anything and despite them hurting him he still is so friendly.

Another thing that may be worth asking about is Addison’s disease , pretty rare but often they make what looks like a recovery after IV fluids and then go downhill fast again .

BiteyShark · 04/11/2017 15:39

Thanks Floralnomad I'll bear that in mind if nothing is found.

Grass seed or similar causing inflammation? Any weird things going round your local area?
Poor baby.
Worth a consult with a specialist vet?

Yokohamajojo · 04/11/2017 18:53

Oh Bitey so sorry to hear he’s not better! I haven’t written in a while but have been following! Keeping all my fingers crossed and thinking of you! Lots of love

BooToYouToo · 04/11/2017 20:09

Lots of love to you and Biteypup, you must all be totally shattered. Hope the next day or two brings some answers.

DeepfriedPizza · 06/11/2017 08:25

Any change, Bitey?

BiteyShark · 06/11/2017 08:30

He's a bit more stable as we left him at the emergency vets all weekend. I am waiting for my vets to come in and take over his care so expecting phone call this morning as to what to do next Sad

It's been awful this weekend without him at home but he was in so much discomfort that he had to go back in Sad

I hope you hear something soon Bitey. It must have been a very long weekend Flowers

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 06/11/2017 10:42

It’s good that he has been more comfortable, fingers crossed they get to the bottom of it today. FlowersFlowers

Ughhh so we have had to make a decision to hold off or go in with a very risky operation. He's not passed anything yet which is good as no diarrhoea but bad as in nothing passed. He is now eating well. They think the cough and regurgitation may be not connected but will treat in case he now has a trachea infection.

Going to sends bloods off to see if b12 congenital deficiency. If he deteriorates today or no further tomorrow then we will do the operation. There is no right or wrong way as the operation carries a reasonable risk and it's not a clear case of obstruction which would make it easier to decide.

Bloody hell this is so hard and at the end of the day it's down to us. Hope we are doing the right thing but only time will tell. He's staying in the vets for now.

Hope he gets well soon .

Wolfiefan · 06/11/2017 11:17

So sorry. It's always a good ploy to ask the vet WWYD. We made the difficult decision to attempt risky gut surgery on our old cat. They suspected cancer. So pleased we did. It wasn't cancer at all and she recovered fine.
Sending healing vibes!

DeepfriedPizza · 06/11/2017 11:21

What a decision to make, very hard. Good idea by wolfie to ask what the vet would do.

BiteyShark · 06/11/2017 11:21

Wolfie the vet(s) said they wouldn't know which way to jump either. It really is coming down to what happens now in the next 24 hours. They don't consider him to be in any immediate danger so that is good and if that changes then he is in the right place and they would just go in.

Arghhh it's so hard Sad but at least decision made for today.

What a horrible decision to have to make Sad

Good that he's eating. Fingers crossed for a nice normal poo in due course.

Wolfiefan · 06/11/2017 13:28

That is hard. But at least they don't consider it an emergency. Hopefully he will improve or the surgery will reveal the cause and he can start to recover.
We are back to the vets later. Just sore paw but my anxiety is yelling "Alabama rot!" it isn't. Bloody dogs. Making us love them and worrying about them and not telling us what's wrong. Sad

BiteyShark · 07/11/2017 03:03

Sat staring at the clock as can't sleep. The update last evening wasn't great so I am worried what the morning will show Sad

LeapinLizards · 07/11/2017 03:17

Hand hold for you. Really hoping the morning brings more positive news for you.

Wolfiefan · 07/11/2017 07:18

Thinking of you this morning. Flowers

BiteyShark · 07/11/2017 09:57

Not happy to make the call yet for the OP. No diarrhoea but they haven't fed him any food this morning in case he goes for the OP. They think the coughing is not connected to his stomach issues. So therefore he might be better but might not as we only find out when he is fed.

He is bright in himself so I said feed him and the b12 test should be back today. The only way I am going to know for sure is to go and look at him myself as the vet that has been looking after him isn't in today which doesn't help. If no change I am going to ask to visit him this afternoon and speak to someone face to face.

Do cocker spaniels get bloat? Our dog (large breed) had it and was coughing and staggering; he had gas in his stomach too. He had an operation urgently and survived.

BiteyShark · 07/11/2017 10:45

They keep scanning him and nothing shows so I think that discounts bloat.

I just wish he would go one way (obviously wish him to get better) or the other to make the decisions easier.

OP posts:
Floralnomad · 07/11/2017 13:50

When you say no diarrhoea does that mean he has still passed nothing ? Surely if he’s been eating Sat/ sun / mon he should have done something .

BiteyShark · 07/11/2017 14:08

I found it hard to work out what was happening on the phone today (different vet). I am seeing them in person this afternoon to get a clear picture. He had diarrhoea last evening but none this morning???

OP posts:
Elphame · 07/11/2017 14:21

But he hasn't eaten I guess since last night if they were considering surgery? Really hope you get some answers this afternoon.
