Changing microchip details of new dog when old owner not forthcoming!

Kidsruinedmylife · 01/11/2017 18:21

We rehomed a dog about a month ago, in all the excitement when we picked her up we didn't get the paperwork for her microchip or her vaccination record. I have no reason to believe the previous owner was dodgy in anyway, however I am having huge difficulty now in obtaining the details from her so that we can change the microchip details. She just isn't answering texts etc.

Is there any way to do this without having her input?

For the microchip, just get your vet to scan their chip and give you the number, then you can check against the databases to see who they are logged with, then fill out the form of the appropriate one to register as the new owner.

If you can't get the vacc certificate, you might have to start again

As simple as that!! I shall get her to the vets forthwith to be scanned

Last one I did only took a couple of weeks to come through. It was with Petlog. They have to contact the previous owner to check they agree to the transfer, then they send you the new certificate.

we have got almost same situation bought pup from Yorkshire didnt get any paperwork. I contacted lady she sent a chip registration number but when I enter number into log it states no owner details recorded!! Can this be possible ??
Also saying she can't find injection card so don't know if he even had injections. I asked lady did she breed and was told yes but now saying to me she is trying to contact the breeder for info so obviously been lied to.

The microchip company will write to the registered address and give them so many days to contest the change of chip details. If they don’t hear anything they’ll change it for you.

fivedogstofeed · 25/08/2020 18:31

@Angie3105 it's possible to microchip a dog but not register the details.
Presume seller is a dodgy breeder who has chipped to keep within the law but doesn't want her details registered. Has your pup been scanned for a microchip?

Angie3105 · 25/08/2020 18:39

I'm waiting to take her vets to be scanned to see if the details she sent me are on chip in dog if there is q.

This happened to me. Turned out DDog was still registered to someone three owners ago.

Vet scanned and gave me the microchip number, and company it was registered with. I had to send off a form to the microchip company, who wrote to previous owners and gave them 28 days to contest (they didn't, but it is an important safeguard against dog theft). Company then changed the chip details to my own.

I am getting my dog temporarily fostered. The dog is chipped to me i have the microchip paperwork.
I got the dog 5 years ago on preloved.
I have no other paperwork. I paid £180 for the dog cash and that was it.
Can my dog be changed on the microchip without my knowledge?
Ive no reason not to trust these people and they live close to me.
But i just want to keep myself safe and not have this problem should it even occur.
Any advice greatly appreciated!

No, the companies always contact the owner as listed on the chip to check that they agree to the transfer.

You can, as owner, change the info in the chip temporarily to cover things like your holiday address, periods the dog is in kennels, periods in foster care

Thank you

You need to discuss this with the fosters as the law says the chip should be in the names of the registered keeper - just like a car. The details on the chip are technically not confirmation of ownership in the eyes of the law. If you have a receipt for purchase and a foster contract to show you intend to take the dog back this would establish ownership.

I think if you get in touch with the microchip registry they will contact the former owner and hopefully sort it out from there. The more details and proof you can provide the better.

How do I change my dogs micro chip without the ower

fuckpig · 09/07/2023 11:33

It's possible the dog was stolen. From my own experience often the owners are not informed by the Chip companies when a dog is stolen or lost.
