Two schnauzers? Hmmmm!

We are the proud owners of a lovely three year old mini schnauzer. I adore her and she is the ‘perfect’ dog. My children and husband would love another and we have found the perfect one for us. But.... I am worried that a) my current dog will think I’m replacing her (yes she is very spoilt!) and b) what if I just don’t ‘gel’ with another one. I know I am being irrational, I was like this about having a second child! We have the money, space etc etc for another yet something is just niggling me and I’m having some
Doubts. Help!

By the way I use the word ‘perfect’ loosely! We are FAR from the perfect family and would never describe us or dog that way in the proper sense!!!

I felt the same way about my dog. He's a working cocker and he was the best thing we ever did for our family. Had the same anxiety about dog 2 but went for it. She's currently 11 weeks, so early days, but ddog1 seems happy and she is wonderful. Seeing them play together is just lovely.

I feel exactly the same about my first dog, she is a one year old terrier and perfect in the sense that we love her and she is devoted to us.
We now also have an 11 week old pup of the same terrier breed and everything is going really well. Wolfpup 1 dotes on Wolfpup 2, they seem to both have the same amazing gentle, loving and kind nd temperament. I’m really glad we went for it.

Nonky i have a 15 month old mini schnauzer and often wonder if we should get her a little companion. I’m hesitant about how she would get on with them, she’s very friendly but also a bossy madam! Oh yes and we have spoilt her too. And I suppose it’s also the thought of all the work times two, the expense etc.. I’m very tempted though....

I think I've only once seen a 'single schnauzer'. Whenever I see schnauzers, there always in pairs oddly. The two schnauzers that I see regulularly are massive barkers- they both set each other off as soon as they see another dog. I get the impression that they have definitely learnt this behaviour off each other. Not sure whether this is a schnauzer thing?

We have a lovely dog that we had from a pup and inheritated a second dog aged 2 at the time. They love each other and provide great mutual company . I find it much easier having two than one even though the second dog is very anxious and not well hose trained.

I think it boils down to does your dog like most other dogs ? We only have one because he's pretty anti social and although he has a few doggy friends apart from them all being smaller than him they have little else in common .

I don't think I've ever seen a single one. I agree they always seem to be in 2s or 3s.

OP I do think it depends on your dog. Do you think he's a social boy or a likes his own space boy?

I've got a cavalier and recently added a cocker puppy. Initially the cavalier was scared of the puppy! A few days in my Cav realised he could tell puppy to sod off when puppy was being over the top. Then they became best buds and play together lovely although the 3month old cocker puppy is stronger than Cav in a game of tug, which makes cav look sad

Oops should have refreshed page - DC is poorly and I read thread, she woke up, etc, so I hadn't seen you'd said he was very social dog.

If you get a puppy initially they will need separate walks - puppies can't walk too far, so shouldn't go on a big walk with older dog and it's good for them to learn to focus on you and learn manners, not want to run off playing with their best buddy.

I know a few schnauzers and they are all singles , the only multiple dogs I know now are a pair of border x jrts , 2 labs , a lab and a springer , a lab/poodle with a cocker/ poodle , 2 small mixes , 2 borders and a woman who has 4 , 3 staffs and a cocker spaniel .

My MIL has a single schnauzer and he's a little shit but I suspect that's just how shes trained him. God help the neighbourhood if she ever got a second

Had my gorgeous Schnauzer boy for 7 years and the only problem was his separation anxiety. After trying literally everything, we got a puppy (poodle cross fluffy little menace!) and he was cured instantly. I love them both dearly but secretly my old stinky Schnauzer is my favourite :)
