Kennel club registration

Two weeks in with new pup and I'm looking at her KC change of ownership form. Big bold letters across the top "you are currently not the registered owner of pup", please fill this in and pay the fee to become the owner. Surely that's just the registered owner according to them and it doesn't actually prove ownership. I'm not a big fan of the kennel club and don't intend to have any dealings with them/breed/compete so does it matter if I don't update their records? The fee's small but still just feel I'm paying for a bit of paper that doesn't really mean anything. Anyone else not change the registration?

Well if you don't do it your pup will be registered to the breeder. I don't know if that will complicate things for insurance purposes or if pup gets lost/stolen.

There is no such thing as a definitive proof of ownership for dogs. In cases of dispute the law will look at the evidence to make a call on who is the real owner. KC reg is part of that but not the whole. Other evidence used include: microchip registration, vet history, photos of a lifetime together.

I did although Elfpup will not be used for breeding or shown other than maybe in the local village pet show.

It's not definitive proof of ownership but along with the microchip (which I have registered with his pet name followed by his KC name) strengthens my case if he ever goes missing.

If his microchip is a petlog one, then you can register your details on his microchip for free once you've paid KC to change their documents to you (i think it's because KC owns petlog?).

Personally I would never be comfortable with it not having my name on. There is no definite way to prove ownership so I always figure the more evidence he's mine the better.

Forgot to say I also have zero intention of breeding or showing.
