Why does my dog want to bury everything?

Hi everyone, we have a GSD/Husky cross 10 month old. We re-homed about 2 months ago and he's an absolute joy. However, he has started trying to bury everything from toys to treats. If he cant go outside to dig a hole he tries burying under the rug or under papers at the side of furniture.

Does anyone know why and if we can train him out of this?

He's saving it for later...

I also have a gsd/husky cross, and he does the same thing! We find all sorts buried under the sofa cushions Grin

I just think it's a dog thing.

My chihuahua does it

It's just a dog thing

My jrt (rip) was notorious for it but I used to really piss him off. He would go off and bury something, I would stay out of the way and just as he was finished, make sure he saw me looking at him.

He was outraged and would immediately unbury the item and try again Grin

Used to keep me amused

He was a rubbish burier though. Rugs, blankets, clothes...even shoes.

Back in the wild dogs didn't always know when their next meal would be and so any spares/left over food they'd hide or bury to save for another time.

It's just built in them.
My gsd does it a lot!

You say he's a rescue - do you know what his background was like previous to you getting him? this is quite common with dogs who have been starved or mistreated

It's called caching. Normal behaviour.
