Finally, after a great deal of weirdly obsessive stalking research, young Dash has joined the Wooster menagerie. Allegedly whippet but I suspect a touch of bull in there somewhere..!

I am quietly envious. We are not at a point in our lives where we coukd give a dog enough time and attention, but I would love to have a whippet.

Hi Frosty your little whippet is nearly the same age as mine. How are you finding having a whippet teenager? Mine is pretty full on Grin

frostyfingers · 09/10/2017 09:03

Very full on at the moment - she’s into everything and shredding stuff whenever she can. I found her up on the utility room draining board the other morning, completely unbothered by my reaction - if she could have shrugged I’m sure she would have! I thought labs were bad at scoffing stuff but this whippet is way worse - every walk is like a picnic for her. We’re working hard on recall and on balance succeeding but I’m not sure if she’s in full flight that we’d ever get her back! How are you getting on? Love her to bits though (except when she “read” a library book the other week and I had to pay a substantial fine!).

Whippetsare the best!

tkband3 · 09/10/2017 10:37

Whippets are amazing. Stanley is 13 months now and is still has his moments. He's quite big now, so can help himself off the kitchen counter if you're not looking and still loves destroying toys given half a chance. He seems to have lost his fondness for shredding loo rolls though Smile.

His recall is pretty good - we worked really hard on it in the early days - but I do still carry a box of treats with me on walks to tempt him back to me. I have no hope though when he's chasing a squirrel Grin.

bluetongue · 09/10/2017 10:42

Yes, mine is a handful Frosty. I'd literally researched whippets and whippet puppies for years before I got one and was still taken by surprise with how much mischief he gets into. All shoes are out of his reach, the kitchen counters have been cleared because of his counter surfing and I find it hard for me to eat without him wanting to have a taste. Sigh. Let's not even talk about his carpet chewing habit.

He's a very sweet boy though and does make me laugh. I'm sure one day when he's a sensible, middle aged whippet gentleman I'll miss his puppy craziness.

Bringing back memories of our teenage Whippet- we had a zoomie broken leg & 6 weeks cage rest! Blush

If it's any help ours seemed to change at about 2 yrs old and settle, a lot less thievery & her chewing stopped- She is very sensible now at 4yrs. Never underestimate the reach of a Whippet, those front legs are like long arms!

We still get an enthusiastic 'Whippet Welcome' and a gift we can't have & Squirrels also seem to trump any training!

bluetongue · 09/10/2017 11:39

Oh and the appetite. How can one little dog eat so much and yet stay so slim Shock

MrsWooster · 09/10/2017 12:12

This is a lovely pointy thread! Our chap is 5 monthsish and, after a spookily sensible starter is revealingly reassuringly insane tendencies. We are very lucky though; we are his third home and someone, somewhere ga

Whoops!

Has done some training with him so his recall is reasonable, provided I make a tit of myself, waving my arms wildly and yell speaking in a voice that only dogs and bats can hear. We will go to Dogs Trust classes soon and hopefully he will love it.
