Stopping barking

How do I train my dog to not bark?

Backstory... he has always barked when somebody has come to the front door but it's never been too much of an issue as we've been in a detached house... And people hardly ever come to the door Chinese takeaway usually

I have now moved into a rented flat and my dog has started barking every time somebody comes in the main door. I obviously don't want to irritate the neighbours so how can I train this out of him?!

There is a really effective way but it can take a bit of time and commitment.

Put a mat near the door
When ever the dog barks or hears the noise which makes them bark put the yummiest treats on the mat - let the dog see this.
The noise will happen, the treat appears on the mat, the dog will run to the mat for the treat.

If this is done consistently most dogs will stop the barking and run to the mat for the treat.

You do need to do this regularly to start with to reinforce the reward but over time the going to the mat will become the default behaviour rather than the barking

Thank you! I have been getting a treat when the woofs start and getting him to sit and giving him the treat when he is totally focused on me, but might try the mat thing 😊
