Getting an old dog spayed

JonSnowsWhore · 13/09/2017 22:25

My poor old girl is going to be spayed tomorrow, she's 12 so I'm really worried about her being under. I keep rationalising by saying the vets wouldn't have booked her in if they thought it was really unsafe but positive stories of similar age dogs would help right now 😬

She has a bit of arthritis in her back leg but still manages so jump on furniture, bounce about & get excited when she goes out so other than that she's in good health!

Bump, she's at the vets now :(

I don't have a similar story, but I'll hold your hand Jon Brew

If it's any comfort, a spay is a completely routine procedure. The vet has probably done hundreds of them.

Best to get it done though. . Our older dog had pyametra and nearly died - emergency surgery much more risky. .
Hope she is OK. . .

I had to get a 10 year old spayed recently and was frantic with worry but she was absolutely fine and honestly bouncing around that same evening. The vet took really good care because of her age and kept her on fluids while she was under anaesthetic which I think made a difference. She made an amazing recovery.
Fingers crossed for your girl.

Thanks Smile yes they were really reassuring when I dropped her off, obviously they can never guarantee anything though!

I did get a slight telling off about her teeth which made me feel shit. If they'd bothered to ask, I only got her a few years ago & her teeth were in a terrible state, I've paid to have the rotten ones taken out but what was left weren't in the best state. But oh well, they only have her best interests at heart I suppose!

They said she was going to be done this morning as they only had one car in for neutering as well so I'm hoping for a phone call soon. And I hope she doesn't hate me when I go to pick her up 🙈

I'll always remember when I picked my ddog up after her spay. She was walking slowly down the corridor with a nurse. When she saw/smelled me, her little face lit up and her tail started wagging. My heart nearly burst!

Oh don't, I'll look like a right tit if I cry Grin
When she had her teeth out she was all dozy when I picked her up, and I had a migraine so we both got home & had a good sleep on my bed

She's awake, they said they tried to get some of the tarter off of her teeth & some fell out 😳 she only had half her bloody teeth when she went in there to begin with 🙈

I know it's not funny but bloody hell, my poor gappy dog, could only happen to her!
