Dog sitting on knee.

NachoAddict · 13/09/2017 20:39

My dog likes to sit on my knee or next to me with his head on my lap, basically as close as he can get.

My ex was a dog trainer and had working dogs. He said that my dog sits on me to show his dominance and that he owns me.

So who is right? Me - Dog is just affectionate or Ex - Dog has dominance issues.

To be honest I think the ex was jealous of the dog.

A www, I would say you. My little one does this, always on my knee. Surely if it was dominance with her she would be alert and protective looking. She's not she's asleep and upside down looking.

BackieJerkhart · 13/09/2017 20:47

My dog is exactly the same and there isn't a dominant bone in his body! He is the softest most placid and docile creature there ever was. He just loves being close to me all the time Grin

NachoAddict · 13/09/2017 20:51

That is exactly what I thought. He is just a big stupid dog who loves cuddles.

I think maybe because he had working dogs and mine is a pet that things are different.

Your ex is pretty out of touch, dominance theory has been resoundingly debunked.

If your dog is coming to cuddle with you then chances are he just wants the contact. Absolute worst case he might be doing it because he feels a bit insecure but if he seems happy and relaxed then he just wants a cuddle.

ChristinaParsons · 13/09/2017 20:59

Your ex is 100% correct. I bet he doesn't try and sit on other dogs

Pippin8 · 13/09/2017 21:05

My 30kg Doberman sits & lies on me, she also sits on the spaniel & my DH, she just likes physical contact.

I thought the pack theory was a myth?

NachoAddict · 13/09/2017 21:22

He is almost 40kg the big brute but he just likes to have a nap on, near or with me. He is so sweet.

He does snuggle up to other dogs but cant say I have noticed him sitting on them.

I side with you and believe e it's because your dog just loves you and enjoys being near you.
My dog often likes to lie on me or next to me and I definitely don't think it's dominance as he usually wants to be near me when he's tired or when he's afraid from fireworks, storms and shadows (yes, shadows Grin).

NachoAddict · 13/09/2017 22:36

Haha Shadows Grin

Mine is a big scaredy too, great big american bull dog runs away from shitzus.

Thinkibg about it, he will sit on or near me or the two older dc but gived the youngest a very wide berth so surley if it wad dominance he wouldnt be letting the smallest family member be the boss.

Affection it is.

Interesting one. My 44kg dog follows me everywhere, even lies next to the shower cubicle when I shower! She likes to sit really close and lean on me for cuddles whenever I'm not moving! She is very timid and not dominant at all!

On the other hand, my mate has a fucking vicious rather testy daschund who always hops on her knee and then growls and snaps at anyone who comes near her while she's there!

Maybe it depends on the dog?

NachoAddict · 14/09/2017 10:14

Smaller dogs scare me they seem to have so much attitude!

He isn't growly or alert on my knee he is usually fast asleep.

Dominance is bunkum. A flawed theory involving a flawed experiment and that experiment wasn't even on dogs, but wolves. Which aren't dogs. Even the person who came up with the theory doesn't believe it now.

Many dogs like 'contact'. They find it relaxing and comforting, as do people, if it is their own choice. They don't like - as a general rule, there are always exceptions - hugs forced on them, or being held in place.
