WWYD revdog barking at neighbour

We have a lovely friendly 3 year old Tibetan Terrier.
Some people can walk past our back garden and he doesn't bat an eyelid, other people walk past and he barks and barks.
We are on the corner and have a high fence so neither neighbour nor dog can see each other.

This afternoon, DD was in the garden playing with the dog when somebody walked past (into the cup de sac) and the dog barked. The neighbour said quite loudly "that bloody dog, always barking at me" or words to that effect.

Is it worthwhile my messaging the neighbours in the cup de sac and saying that I understand the dog is annoying/upsetting some by barking and could I arrange to introduce the dog to said neighbour? I assume (perhaps wrongly of course) that he won't then bark when they walk past.

Or am I living in cloud cookoo land and need to just ignore?

What if the neighbour dislikes dogs & refuses?

Boatmistress17 · 04/09/2017 20:38

Dogs know when people aren't nice. .
Listen to its judgement. .

I would just ignore. Chances are an introduction wouldn't make a difference. Can you work in training him to not bark? So be out there and distract with treats and praise when someone comes past....more treats when he doesn't bark??? Might work. Guess it depends if it's just the odd time or he's out there barking loads?

That would be her option of course and I'd respect it and know that there is not much else that I can then do.

I should say, that if the dog is in the garden and barks he is bought straight back in the house; I discourage it.

Thank s for the replies.
I will get somebody to help me by walking past while I'm in the garden and if dog senses person but doesn't bark I will praise and treat.
Worth a go huh?

I wouldn't want to meet it. Can't you train it not to bark?
My next door neighbour's 2 dogs bark at me every time I go into the garden and he's had them seven years. You'd think they'd know I live here by now.

mckenzie · 04/09/2017 20:47

I know I'm biased Candlemiss but my dog is the sloppiest friendliest sweetest dog normally. He's not a big barker at all.
10 people might walk past the garden and he'll maybe bark at 1 of them.
But I appreciate that doesn't help, this particular neighbour.
Nor help you.

We have a new neighbour in our lane with a dog that randomly barks and barks and barks. Usually about seven in the morning when they let it out for a wee and don't let it back in. Bloody annoying. And I'm a dog lover, with a dog and several years of ownership and training behind me. It's just an untrained dog with untrained owners. These things need working on. Well done Op for taking the time.

Thinking back to when we first got our rottweiler. . She hated one of our neighbours.
Roll on a couple of years and he murdered someone.
I trust my dogs instincts. .

SoPassRemarkable · 04/09/2017 22:39

Dogs dislikes are funny aren't they. Mine is the daftest, softest thing but there is one dog in the village she hates for no reason. She turns into a snarling monster when she sees it and the first time it happened properly went for it and had her teeth round it's back leg shaking it. It's like a switch flicks when she sees it.

mckenzie · 05/09/2017 07:27

I had to read that twice Boatmistress! I thought you meant your dog murdered someone.

Wish she had. My friend who died would still be alive. .

I'm so sorry for my crass comment.
