I feel like I'm just plodding along at the moment. Every day feels the same! Pup walks nicely until someone makes a fuss of her then she pulls for the remainder of the walk as she can't calm down Sad I am hopeful that it will change so I'm taking her on the walk to school every day, that way she will see the same people at the same time each day and hopefully it will take away the excitement!? Yesterday was a bit of a fail, we both ended up plastered in mud Grin but I praise and treat her every time we pass people without her jumping at them and now it's mainly the dogs we need to work on. She just loves everyone and everything including leaves, puddles, wind, you name it!

BiteyShark · 14/09/2017 11:43

Get at least your dog is still young, mine has regressed a bit on his behaviour and with all the other issues I have been lapse on training so need to get back and work on a few things, excitedness and jumping up being one of them Sad

BeTheHokeyMan · 14/09/2017 12:12

Yes apologies in southern Ireland kibble is usually referred to as 'nuts' . I have a bag of the kibble the breeder fed her and I've mixed a scrambled egg in with it and she loved it. She is due her last injection at the end of this month. When can I bring her out for a walk ? I usually do the school run on foot and look forward to bringing her Smile I do feel nervous about it though as I'm worried she might get overwhelmed by traffic noise and lots of people etc

BiteyShark · 14/09/2017 12:14

Pre vaccinations you can carry her in your arms to gently start introducing her to the outside world and noises.

I would ask your vet on when you can walk her as I think it depends on the make of vaccinations as to how long to wait after.

Possibly Bitey, I did make sure he went before we left but sometimes when we are in the garden he'll go two or three times in ten minutes so maybe he wasn't completely empty. Probably hadn't done enough with him before we left so wasn't sleepy enough either. He doesn't care for these colder mornings so hasn't been keen to have his wander in the garden.

It's hard enough to keep up with training on the run of the mill day to day let alone when you've had all the problems you've had Bitey. I haven't done nearly enough.

Mairyhinge · 14/09/2017 12:33

Hello fellow puppy parents...I've got (almost) 16 week old Bedlington whippet, named Trigger.
He's mostly very good and learns quick.. however our problem at the mo is this.
When dh comes home from work Trig is really pleased to see him, jumping, tail wagging etc. Later inthe evening when everyone's settled Trig will start to growl at dh, then bark, jump up and try to get dhs head into his mouth!! It's quite bizarre and nothing distracts him. It's distressing too. Dh is getting really fed up of it, it's like Trigger is attacking him and being violent, but at 16 weeks????
Last nigh dh groomed him, fed lots of treats, lots of comforting soothing words, but he still did it.
Anyone any clues as to what to do?!
Thanks :)

GetTheStartyParted · 14/09/2017 12:39

Oh dear Bitey. At least he's on the mend finally so you'll hopefully get back on track quickly.
I've asked my DH to walk pup now and then as he's a bit firmer than I am but I asked him 2 weeks ago and he still hasn't had chance.

Sorry Mairy it's not something I've experienced so I don't know. All I can think is praise the positive and firmly remove pup from the situation when he's aggressive.

BiteyShark · 14/09/2017 12:44

Mine used to have mad bitey moments in the evening, so much I could almost set my watch by them. The only thing that stopped it was a brief timeout (in crate or outside of the room) for him to calm down. At first I had to do this repeatedly but he soon got the message that he would be removed from us (which he didn't like) if he didn't stop doing it. Because it was so regular I could see it starting and I would jump on the behaviour quickly each time to stop it escalating.

bluetongue · 14/09/2017 12:56

Bitey I would think Bitey dog has been restricted in his activity and exercise with all his health issues lately. Bluepuppy was climbing the walls with his resting after neutering and he didn't have any complications. I was advised by the vet that he could go for 'gentle' walks around the block but I gave up after a few times as he tried to drag me down the street Shock Now he's back to his usual activity levels he's much more manageable.

monkeywithacowface · 14/09/2017 13:02

Monkeypup used to do this. Dog trainer said it was his way of getting my attention and wanting to play. Have all but stopped it now by either preempting it and making sure we play/train him prior to his mad half hour and giving very short time outs so he know that it is not the way to get our attention. I don't think it is aggression just an over excited pup saying "right let's play"!

BiteyShark · 14/09/2017 13:02

I must admit I am hoping it's a response to the lack of stimulation over the last month and he's just getting it out of his system but I have been so tired lately that I know I haven't been doing as much as I should. We are doing agility and gun dog training this week which should give me a kick up my backside to start working on his manners again Grin

monkeywithacowface · 14/09/2017 15:35

Mystery of the wet bed solved. It was the frozen kong defrosting all over the bedding! Just got back from school run to find him happily chewing away at it and a big wet patch where it's resting between his paws.

Maybe frozen kong in the bed isn't the way forward Confused

GetTheStartyParted · 14/09/2017 15:38

That's funny @monkey glad you figured it out so quickly!

monkeywithacowface · 14/09/2017 15:43

So am i but now both he and his bed smell like tinned dog meat His bed from this mornings incident is still drying. I may just have to sling one of his old towels over the top of it for tonight!

BiteyShark · 14/09/2017 15:44

Awww good news monkey. Maybe stuff it with biscuits or get a wipe down waterproof bed Grin

monkeywithacowface · 14/09/2017 15:51

Waterproof bed might be the best option. Until we've sorted his tummy out he's on tinned meat from the vet. I daren't try any other types of treats just yet. Can't wait until I can though and then I can find him a more challenging treat dispenser as he makes short work of even the frozen kong! Although it has been a good way to space out his feeds and get him to slow down his eating, hopefully aiding his digestion a bit.

BiteyShark · 14/09/2017 16:00

I have had to move to using half kibble and half wet food as he would only eat his kibble if I mixed it with scrambled egg and cheese which I think everyday wasn't really good for his diet. So far he gobbles it down but I do have to hold my breath preparing it as I hate the smell of wet dog food [boak]

monkeywithacowface · 14/09/2017 16:29

Ah wet dog food doesn't bother me but the farts it create Envy

Soubriquet · 15/09/2017 11:19

Just did Lexa's anal glands. I've done it with many dogs, but never have I had it spurt across at me like hers. Envy

Must have been really full

BiteyShark · 15/09/2017 11:37

Soubriquet Envy I think the cost of a vet visit would be more preferably than me doing that Grin.

I have given myself a kick up the arse today and took BiteyDog out on the lead for training to walk nicely on the lead and we tried to stay calm around people (mixed results). There is SO much to remember to do; gun dog training, agility training, teeth (lapsed badly), nails, grooming, lead walking, basic manners, calmness arghhhhh feeling a bit stressed as I really wanted a well behaved dog at a year old and I know he has made great progress but I have been a bit lazy Blush especially after his recall issues improved.

Yokohamajojo · 15/09/2017 11:54

I am so with you Bitey Yokopups recall has been great recently but I am still nervous around bicycles and running kids (especially with any balls)

At home he still has his moments when he just gets that look and then goes around looking for something he can destroy or eat...constantly picking up ripped tissues, ripped plastic bags, broken plastic things etc

Another very much on my list is not getting too excited when visitors come, at the moment I have to chuck him in the garden when I get food deliveries as he goes mental

Soubriquet · 15/09/2017 12:36

I know...but it's cheaper doing it at home and once I've washed my hands, it's all over Grin

BiteyShark · 16/09/2017 06:10

Yoko I am laughing at 'the look'. Yep mine gives me the 'eye' to say well I am not getting the attention I want so I will make sure I get it (grabs nearest shoe and runs off into the garden bouncing around with his prize grrrrrr).

BeTheHokeyMan · 16/09/2017 09:06

Anal glands?! dear god no !! I've never heard of them Blush Had a bit of a 'what the hell have we done this is a huge mistake' moment at 5am this morning I shouldn't really complain as she is going a few hours at night without needing to be bought out to the toilet ,its just the constant broken sleep that is killing me Sad.Well that and the completely random poo she did on the mat during the night I had just bought her in from outside and took my eye off her for a sec and that's all it took! Such fun scrubbing poo out of carpet at 5am Grin.
We live rurally too so its absolutely pitch black at night despite a few outside lights and I always feel nervous walking her around the garden waiting for her to go.How are you all doing ? I'm off to the shops later today going to pick up some toys ,treats and along amongst other things . Must also ring the vet to book her in for her last injection and microchipping and I also need to buy a dog licence on monday.

Wolfiefan · 16/09/2017 09:43

I am never doing massive pup's anal glands. Ever!
Boak!!
About to head off for an arboretum stroll. Tomorrow we are off to our last ever puppy class in a show. She's 1 next week.
Hokey it gets easier. Soooo much easier. I remember the toilet training and night waking well. It's hard.
Right. Must get moving. Poor sighing neglected pup! Grin
