So we are going today to look a potential new member of the family. We always had in mind a male puppy but now im not so sure (both bitch and dog are available). I have owned both so can anyone tell me the pros and cons of a bitch and a dog to help me decide.

Choose the one that appeals most to you and worry about the rest later!

Sex isn't a reliable predictor of temperament/personality/behaviour so unless there's a specific reason to go for one over the other (for example in her youth DDog2 wasn't terribly keen on other bitches so we played it safe and went for male puppies) I'd go with the puppy most suited to you and your family.

Usually a breeder will either steer you towards a particular puppy, suggest you choose one from a small number they believe would be a good fit or they may even want to choose for you. Be wary if they're happy for you to just pick whichever puppy you want without any input from them.

I would go for temperament over sex too.

I've had both, found my bitches to be much more loyal and devoted but also more highly strung. My dogs have all been more laid back but whether this is true of them all it's hard to say!

We got there and we had decided to let the puppy pick us so we have ended up with a male. He comes home in 10 days.
