The joy of small dogs

I've only ever had big dogs up until now, but DD wanted a small one. So a mini-dachshund X joined the pack recently and OMG I'm overwhelmed with how brill it is to have the sprat!

He can:

  • be picked up when needed rather than herded and cajoled
  • sit on your lap (although the big ones also think they can and always seem surprised that bits of them fall over the edge)
  • be walked by DD
  • and cutest of all, he doesn't have an elegant lope like the other 2 he just waddles along

I knew I'd love him but I didn't know how much I'd love having such a small fellow around the place. When you stroke him you run out of dog Smile

I give you a russian toy terrier. They are the sweetest tiniest dogs. We had one in work recently, it weighed less than 2kg and was called Hannibal Grin

Oh I have found my people. When I win the lottery I am going to live in a mansion filled with an assortment of tiny terriers.

I currently have three JRTs. Middle one is the smallest and my baby. He is also completely blind.

Some beautiful dogs on here

I have 2 shih tzu's, they're fab. Can sit on my lap, barely take up any room in the car when we go on holiday (one actually sits on whomever is in the passenger seat), I can just move them to where I want them to be, and the kids can help walk them!

reallyanotherone · 04/08/2017 19:39

Mine is just under 1.5 kg. Tiny.

catiinboots · 04/08/2017 19:39

Totes agree CJ! I always say I love love love big dogs and would have one if I had a big home. But even then I don't think I could put up with the enormous turds, huge bowls of food and massive beds.

My friend has a Weimaraner x Great Dane and has to use TWO hands to pick up her shits

Nifflerbowtruckle · 04/08/2017 20:24

My 7.5 kg shih tzu she's a total sweetheart but she's a full of personality and can be a bit of a princess Hmm.

My in laws springer spaniel is totally crazy but thinks he's a little dog and likes to sit on your knee and he likes being picked up and wraps his legs around you Grin.

cat that's my dream too! I want a giant rambling house and a pack of terriers to follow me wherever I go.

I have 2 little dogs, a Jack Russell cross and a Cairn terrier cross. DH was always adamant he wanted a big dog, but we ended up taking in two scrappy little rescues and now he's a little dog convert.

I just love how you you can pick them up
And cuddle them, and they're exactly the right size to spoon with 😍

catiinboots · 05/08/2017 04:31

Haha allfur my DH Is exactly the same. His beloved Springer died shortly before we met and he told me he hated small dogs, particularly JRTs. He is a complete convert now. When he has all three of them cuddled up to him on the sofa I always say to them; "Don't forget, daddy doesn't like Jack Russells"

I've never liked little dogs.

But we just didn't have the space for another huge one, plus all the hair...so we got this little 20 pounder. Doesn't shed a bit, so friendly, so easy to transport...

As far as we know she's a Tibetan terrier/Cavalier cross.

cat DH is fond of saying that they're not little dogs, they're TERRIERS, which is a different thing entirely 😬

I forgot to mention yesterday that I love how portable they are. I live in NYC and dogs have to fit in a bag to go on the subway. We just pop them in their carry bags and they come all over town with us. We also have no problems getting taxis and Ubers, because the dogs just sit on my lap.

Couldn't do that with a Great Dane or a greyhound.
