Toilet training

We have just got a cockapoo puppy. He's now 11 and a half weeks and has been with us for 2 weeks. He is doing absolutely brilliantly but I have a question. If he is in the kitchen and he needs to toilet, he will ask to go outside which is great. However, if we're in the lounge, he'll just go on the carpet. I realise the problem is probably with me so what am I doing wrong? I am a novice at this!

Nothing you are doing, just a phase... and maybe a carpet thing. Our labradoodle thought rugs were equivalent to lawn for toileting - and once she'd done it once, no amount of cleaning removes the smell completely, so that reinforces to them that it's an OK toilet spot.

I remember getting quite despondent that she kept going on the rugs, despite being taken outside and encouraged to go, and then suddenly she "got it" around 3 months old (with us for 1 month). Rarely an accident since.

Thanks. We'll just hang on in there. Does seem to be getting a little better.
