Home check tomorrow

I have a home check tomorrow for potentially rescuing a dog from Romania.

I'm guessing they'll just take a took round the house and garden to make sure everything is as we said it was in the application.

I hope they take no note of the dog bed set up in my living room that I bought in an excited moment. Blush

Fingers and toes crossed!

Oooh good luck - let us know how it goes!

DeepfriedPizza · 24/07/2017 16:14

Well, they just cancelled. They are going to try to do it on Thursday. I am pretty gutted

Fantastic! Well done you :)

Any idea what or who you're getting? Be prepared for a bit of "oh my word, what have we done?" for the first week or so but after that it's great!

DeepfriedPizza · 09/08/2017 15:43

We know who we are getting but we are not sure what she is ha ha.

Home check tomorrow

How's it going deepfriedpizza? Had the "oh-heck-what-have-we-done" crisis yet?!

DeepfriedPizza · 21/08/2017 12:59

It's not going well for me if I'm brutally honest. I suffer from anxiety and I had an anxiety attack on Wednesday night so 24 hours after she arrived I had palpitations, sweats, nausea, diarrhoea etc. I've hardly eaten since she came.
I think I've taken on too much

She barks at people, leaves and everything else that moves and it sets my nerves on edge. I have to drag her in the house if she's in the garden. She doesn't bark when on a lead at all.

Sorry for the negativity

Is the rescue supporting you Deepfried? Do they have a trainer/behaviourist available to work with you both?

Her issues don't sound at all unusual for a Romanian rescue, she'll have been through a lot and it may take some time for her to settle.

You might find this article about settling in a Romanian rescue dog helpful, it's got lots of great advice.

DeepfriedPizza · 21/08/2017 13:15

They do have a trainer but they are based too far away.
We have booked our own trainer but he can't start until September 1st (pizza pup was here 2 weeks early)

That link was very helpful, thank you. I think it's my issue rather than the dog's I knew she would have these issues I just didn't realise how badly they'd affect me.

I had EXACTLY the same response to our rescue greyhound when she arrived. Nothing she'd done but it was my anxiety. I was petrified and was convinced we shouldn't have taken her on. I dissolved into tears one night about 10 days after getting her and the next morning seemed fine. I think it's totally normal to feel this way so don't make a knee-jerk reaction. Flipdog is now SO settled with us and we could not imagine not having her.

Give yourself and her time. Good luck. It is a lot to take in to start with. Be gentle with yourself.

DeepfriedPizza · 21/08/2017 13:34

Thanks, that's very reassuring. I would never give her back, dh would be distraught and I don't think I could forgive myself for doing so.

The trainer that will be working with us trained military dogs etc so should help us. I just need to get by in the meantime
