schanuser - good with kids?

We would like to get a puppy and have been reading up on dogs and this breed seems to be a good choice. We are not allergic so doesn't need to be hypoallergenic. We live in london at the moment so don't want too big.

also thinking of having another baby - not pregnant yet - do you think it is dooable if we get a puppy soonish and then train before any baby comes along? really do want to get one!

I don't have one so not an expert but had looked at miniature schnauzers previously and read they are quite barky and need v v v regular grooming, not sure about how they are with children. We have a Welsh Springer, adorable and loves children. And everyone else really! Ours doesn't bark but they can a bit but nothing like the terrier breeds. Hope that helps.

I got my schnauzer when my boy had just turned three. He is the most loving, gentle dog ever with kids, dogs, cats. When he's playing tug games with puppies or little kids he doesn't actually tug, just holds on gently and then lets them win. He loves everyone, will play or run all day long but will also snooze all day depending on what we're doing. I like him scruffy so just give him a trim once every few months. He has a wide 'vocabulary' of sounds and will hold a long conversation if you chat to him. He is just perfect!

My schnauzer is brilliant with the kids. I have boisterous kids & my dog is great.

He does get spooked by other kids sometimes though, and loud noises. He can also be a bit barely - schnauzers are territorial little dogs and as long as I am there to tell him how brave he is, he pipes down.

He's also fabulous...

Cuteness overload, I can't cope with this!

My friend has a schnauzer and he is perfectly trained, a very well behaved dog that always comes when called and reacts straightaway to instructions. He is also very cute. I am scared of ALL dogs but am fine around this dog. He does need a lot of walking, though (no problem as friend takes him for hikes every weekend as well as around our local park morning and evening each day). Can't be left for a long period and doesn't really like going in the car for more than 15 - 20 mins. at a time.

So much depends on the breeder. Even within the litter there are variations. Have you owned raised/trained dogs before?
