How often do you flea/worm?

Hi all, I have a 16 week old puppy. She's been regularly wormed and flea treated since we've had her.

This is our first dog. Vet said once a month is reccomended to treat which I am fine with.

My mother thinking she knows best... Tells me she only works and flea treats once or twice a year and once a a month is ott and a waste of money. Only £10 odd a month for a small dog so didn't think it was too bad. My mother does have 7 cats and a dog so treating is rather expensive 😂

Anyway, does once a month sound about right?

I treat for worms once a month and he has a bravecto tablet every 12 weeks for fleas and ticks - not sure about cats.

BiteyShark · 17/07/2017 22:09

I treat for worms, fleas and ticks once a month with nexgard spectra.

Ylvamoon · 17/07/2017 22:12

I treat for worms regularly... it's important because they do have them and by the time you notice, your dog is already suffering. So go with your vets advice and treatment.
I only treat for fleas "as & when". But have to add that mine have long hair and are groomed and bathed regularly. Which has a negative effect on the flea population! Grin

MipMipMip · 17/07/2017 22:22

I get mine direct from the vets every three months (which annoys me slightly as paperwork says it lasts 12 weeks and three months is 13 weeks.) It's part of a pet care plan.

Where do you live? As a general guide if you're rural and/or meet lots of other animals you need to do it more frequently than if you are urban and socialise rarely. I would do both a minimum of every three months though - I've not heard of anything that lasts longer.

I'm surprised you need to treat every month. Do you get treatment direct from the vet? They will have access to stronger, longer lasting treatments - the cheap ones Bob Martins are a false economy.

Remember, it is far far easier to keep them out than to get rid once you have an infection.

Wolfiefan · 17/07/2017 22:24

Fleas each month. Nexguard. Does ticks and most worms too.
The stuff doesn't last longer than a month. You will be riddled with fleas if you don't keep treating.
Other worms every three months.

AFAIK , all the preventative treatments for lungworm are monthly , either spot ons like advocate or Milpro tablets .

MipMipMip · 18/07/2017 12:21

This is the wormer we get (although direct from vet) it says reduction of lungworm risk, the other types all seem to be covered fully. It lasts three months. www.chemistdirect.co.uk/brands/milbemax/bnd-2m3

Floralnomad · 18/07/2017 12:53

Milbemax is the same as Milpro and to cover lungworm it need to be given monthly .

Lucisky · 18/07/2017 13:15

I use Stronghold (from the vet) which is a monthly spot on treatment. It kills roundworm, ticks, earmites and fleas. She has separate treatment for tapeworm.

MotherPie · 18/07/2017 23:32

Monthly flea treatment and a wormer every 6 months. On the few occasions I've forgot we've had fleas within weeks.

Olliver27 · 19/07/2017 22:44

I treat ours for fleas every 5 weeks (religiously - we had fleas in the house once and they were awful to get rid of). I used to use Frontline from the vets which cost a fortune with 5 dogs, but changed to Fiprotec www.petconnection.ie/product/beaphar-fiprotec-spot-on-flea-removal-and-prevention-for-medium-dogs-10-20kg-3-treatments a couple of years ago. It's the exact same active ingredient, in the same quantity, but literally a third of the price I was paying from the vet.

Treat for worms every 3 months as per the product instructions (3 times a year it'll be Johnson's, once a year they get whatever the vet recommends when they're in for vaccines).

Works out about £4 a month per dog.

nannybeach · 22/07/2017 22:32

Advocate monthly kills fleas and most worms, including lungworms which have been present in this country for some years.drontal twice a year for tapeworm. Some vets I have had say wormer every 3 months, but have been assured tapeworm is quite rare in te UK

MimsyFluff · 27/07/2017 12:54

Olliver27 I use this too I buy it on Amazon for 6 uses normally between £10-15

Wolfiefan · 27/07/2017 12:55

If that stuff has the same active ingredients as frontline then it really isn't going to do the job. Frontline is rubbish.

roundtable · 27/07/2017 13:01

Worms and fleas once a month from the vets. I pay monthly and it covers annual jabs and a few other bits.

I like that it just makes me go to the vets regularly with the pup. She thinks it's an exciting trip out as it's incorporated into a walk. Grin

StarryCorpulentCunt · 28/07/2017 17:04

Worms usually every 3 months or so or if I think they have been exposed. I do it far more regularly in the summer because they swim in lakes and whatnot and it's easier to get worms.

Fleas, I don't. Neither dog has had fleas in years. I feed them a tea spoonful of coconut oil with their food every day and fleas hate it.
