Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

BiteyShark · 14/07/2017 10:28

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

Wolfie You definitely win the biggest teeth bet Grin

I think I would win the bet at the moment for the dog with the smelliest farts [boak]

OP posts:
GooodMythicalMorning · 30/07/2017 17:50

Not sure, mine does deathly farts!

Wolfiefan · 30/07/2017 17:55

Oh I don't know. There ain't no fart like a hound fart! Grin

BiteyShark · 30/07/2017 18:14

Nope I think I will win that one today Grin. BiteyDog seems to have a delicate tummy and despite feeding food that has a high score on allaboutdogfood.co.uk he does tend to have very soft poos a lot. He also had them when on poorer food so I think it might just be him. Looking at what I can get to help firm them up like fibre supplements etc as I also think his anal glands are suffering [stinky] at the moment because of it. His cost is shiny and he seems very fit (vet also comments on how healthy he appears) so I don't think it is affecting him that way but I am envious of doggy hard poos Hmm

What do you do about bagging up a softer poo?

Wolfiefan · 30/07/2017 18:17

Tissue or rip up some long grass and sprinkle over. A nappy sack is good as you're not trying to squeeze it in! Boak!
Bone in raw food firms up poo. Bizarrely raw carrot seems to help bind wolfie pup!

BiteyShark · 30/07/2017 18:18

I just use a few bag to get up the sloppy poo TheAntiBoop then use a watering can to wash the rest away. In the forest I bury it by scraping leaves, sticks etc on top of it.

Tried carrot a few months back but he didn't seem to like it. I have read tinned pumpkin is good but it isn't something I have seen in the supermarkets Sad. I have some dog fibre pellets specifically for firming up poo (apparently made from pumpkin etc) being delivered tomorrow so going to try them.

Protexin Pro-Kolin is fabulous stuff for sorting out dogs with softer poo. It's known as "miracle goo" in this house and we've always got a tube of it stashed away just in case.

It's very easy to overfeed on very high meat content foods which can cause a dog to be a bit loose. 70:30 is the golden ratio for food in this house, a higher meat content than that and they have occasional soft poo. I also find the same with any foods quite high in offal, especially for DWhippet1.

BiteyShark · 30/07/2017 18:45

CornflakeHomunculus I do have a tube of that which I am contemplating using. The reason for holding off is I had to use it when he was a small pup and if looks could kill I would be dead as he seriously detests it. I was hoping to try something to complement his diet but if he doesn't firm up soon I am just going to have to use it and be the most hated person Grin.

I looked at the meat/fish content and it's 70-80% so maybe I need to drop it a bit. I use millieswolfheart and they do food at 60% meat/fish content. Might drop down to that for my next order.

Do you think this sounds good?

Composition:

Turkey (45%; including; 25% freshly prepared turkey, 17% dried turkey, 1.5% turkey oil, .5% turkey gravy), sweet Potato (25%), potato, peas, beet pulp, brewers yeast (1.93%), linseed, alfaalfa, pea protein, minerals, vitamins, mannanoligosaccharides (Prebiotic MOS) (0.19%), fructooligosaccharides (Prebiotic FOS) (0.19%), chamomile (0.19%), yucca schidigera extract (0.04%), cranberry (0.04%), glucosamine (175 mg/kg), chondroitin sulphate (125 mg/kg)

BiteyShark · 30/07/2017 19:51

Is it a specific brand Soubriquet?. I use the website as a guide as I find the food thing a mine field but I do know to avoid grains and other padding food.

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 30/07/2017 20:05

Yes it's called pooch and mutt

BiteyShark · 30/07/2017 20:11

Looks like that brand is coming out at around 3.8/5 on allaboutdogfood.co.uk.

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 30/07/2017 20:12

Ah ok.

I'm currently feeding burns but she's got such loose stools with it. Trying to find another food that she will like but it's got to be small kibble

BiteyShark · 30/07/2017 20:20

So if you go to allaboutdogfood.co.uk you can also just filter on brands. The one I have score high but if I drop to the one with less meat/fish content even though it is the same company it drops to 4/5 but if it suits BiteyDog better then I don't care.

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 30/07/2017 20:24

Yeah. Pity they don't have a filter for small bite

BiteyShark · 30/07/2017 20:27

Does it make a difference if you put the breed as something like toy breed. Wondering if that would help narrow it down?

OP posts:
CornflakeHomunculus · 30/07/2017 20:33

Would wet food be an option Soubriquet? Just thinking it might give you more options as theres no worries about kibble size. Soaking normal sized dry food into a mash is also an option if there's one you think might suit her that doesn't come in a small bite version but it's a bit of a faff.

Soubriquet · 30/07/2017 20:35

No tried that

And wet food.. she is stupidly fussy with it.

Just seen a food catered to small breeds. Got a 4.9 too so looks good.

Called Piccolo

GooodMythicalMorning · 30/07/2017 20:54

We use the royal canin which seems good

Wolfiefan · 30/07/2017 22:04

Wolfie was on royal canin. Trying to get her off it as she has hot and itchy ears. Weaning to raw.

GooodMythicalMorning · 30/07/2017 22:17

That doesnt sound good Sad

We let indy off his lead for the first time today in an enclosed field and he was fab, even distracted by mils mad dog.

BiteyShark · 31/07/2017 08:35

Awww they are so cute when young and want to stay close to you when off the lead. I have fond memories of that Wink.

So the nexgard seems to be doing its job as we keep finding ticks on BiteyDog that die within 24 hours. I just wish I could take a bloody tablet to kill mine as those that don't attach to pup keep biting me Sad

OP posts:
TheAntiBoop · 31/07/2017 09:26

Oh ticks are horrible. It's dh's biggest fear!!

Pup has been very good. Snoozed wth is a bit last night and then got in the crate of his own accord. Still a 5am wake up call though! Only accidents in the house have been due to lack of supervision so need everyone (Dh) to be a bit more vigilant at letting him out when he goes to the door!

Took him out for a little walk to drop dd off and he heard a lot of new noises. Had to carry him as he wont go in the carry bag I bought! Amazing how heavy they get quite quickly!!

He's started eating more and is more playful so that's good. Dh - who was the stickler for rules- had him sleeping on the sofa today.
