Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

Hmmm, ok. Will have a rethink!

Thanks!

CornflakeHomunculus · 28/07/2017 23:35

If it's one of the zip up canvas ones I'd definitely use something more sturdy, just in case.

Definitely have an adult with the puppy, again just in case. None of mine ever panicked or anything but several did puke spectacularly and needed a quick clean up on the go. Thankfully I'm the only driver so DH has to deal with that Grin

Cupofteaandtoilet · 28/07/2017 23:39

Just place marking - will read tomorrow, or early hours when pup wakes me 😳 We have new 9 week old. It's exhausting!

CornflakeHomunculus · 28/07/2017 23:46

I'd recommend taking extra bedding to replace any that gets soiled, a bing bag to put soiled bedding in so you don't have to worry about it leaking everywhere, lots of kitchen roll (seriously, however much you think you might need take more), a sports type bottle of water so you can easily wet kitchen roll for cleaning up without getting water everywhere and poo bags for poo/sick/soiled kitchen roll.

Hopefully they'll be absolutely fine and you'll have a completely event free journey home but best to be prepared!!

Wolfiefan · 28/07/2017 23:49

Wolfie pup was clean and dry on the way home
On a first vet visit she escaped from a soft crate. DS had to grab her and physically restrain her. Thankfully he's a teen.
Now she's in the boot with a dog guard. But I wouldn't travel with a new pup like that.

BiteyShark · 29/07/2017 05:06

We had a car crate that was secured using the seat belt. I sat in the back with him for 2.5 hours. I took lots of kitchen towels etc in case he was ill but he just slept curled up all the way home. Good luck TheAntiBoop.

Just reading back GooodMythicalMorning I love coming home to BiteyDog after work. It's so nice seeing the wagging tail and if I am lucky like DH is (he sees me more so tends to be more excited for DH) we get a wiggle dance when we walk through the door Grin

towelpintpeanuts it sucks when recall goes. We still not 100% back with the occasional piss take but I know he will come back now. It is so much better when they start to listen again rather than seeing him just look at you and then continue doing what he wants.

TheAntiBoop I forgot to say my puppy was sick as soon as we got home in the house so I think we were just lucky it didn't happen in the car.

Have all of your pups grown out of being travel sick?

We've got a couple of touring caravan holidays coming up and I'm the dog/children driver. I'm not sure whether to get something from the vets for the one that will take a couple of hours to her through.

Hope the separation anxiety eases up. Yy to the rewarding when quiet. I still randomly treat when she goes for a last down and I still leave a treat in the crate everytime she's left in there alone apart from night time.

We're taking the caravan tomorrow for a week. Not sure what she's going to make of it though. Hopefully it won't be too unsettling for her when she realises we're all together.

BiteyShark · 29/07/2017 09:22

Mine just curls up in the boot and falls asleep now in the car. However, the longest journey had only been 1 hour and 45 mins.

bluetongue · 29/07/2017 11:27

Mine started off a terrible traveller. I used a small crate when I picked him up from the breeder as I was by myself. He was very distressed and also vomited when he got home. Luckily he's fine without a crate as he goes in the car almost every day.

TheAntiBoop · 29/07/2017 12:37

Mission successful! He lay down and then gave dd his paw to hold. No mess at all thank goodness!

Now he's snoozing in his crate - should I close the door? He did two nights in the crate already so it's not an alien concept to him!

SkeletonSkins · 29/07/2017 14:45

I'd just leave him with the door open - it's great that he's choosing to go on there!

Our pup was awful the first time we travelled to bring him home - was a 2 minute drive and he cried and messed himself! He jumps in the back of the car now no problem - nothing at this age is permanent.

Pups back to his normal self now after the medication. He's still banned from puppy classes this week incase it was contagious but will take him again next week.

TheAntiBoop · 29/07/2017 14:56

Well he has eaten and slept but no wee and he is very wary of us. Lots of sniffing around and then going back in the crate. Ds is worried he's homesick

BiteyShark · 29/07/2017 15:25

TheAntiBoop it's good that he sees the crate as somewhere safe.

He will settle. It's a big change! Wolfie pup has just come back from a village fair. Best puppy at the dog show. She's shattered.

BiteyShark · 29/07/2017 16:01

Glad to hear SkeletonPup is feeling better.

Are those doggy biscuits that WolfiePup has won? Grin

BiteyPup has been snoozing lots today as we went on what should have been a 90 min walk but it took a bit longer than expected. Last night when he was sleeping we had two very loud low growls from him which made me laugh. Hope he wasn't dreaming about me? Shock

Wolfiefan · 29/07/2017 16:03

Wolfie pup growls in her sleep. It's quite unnerving! She won a small bag of biscuits, the big bag of dog food and a red rosette (that my DD is wearing!)

TheAntiBoop · 29/07/2017 16:11

Well done wolfiepup!!

Pup has done first wee and poo outside and is now curled up on the doormat

Wolfiefan · 29/07/2017 16:30

Good work anti pup!

SkeletonSkins · 29/07/2017 17:06

We feed that dog food! Makes for a nice shiny coat. Well done Wolfiepup!

Veterinari · 29/07/2017 18:49

Congratulations Wolfiepup !!

Wolfiefan · 29/07/2017 19:09

Thanks you lovely lot. She's been so nervous (suffers from anxiety like her owner?) She's also been um a handful on the lead. I managed a loose slip lead and she coped with all the noise. There was a climbing wall and teacup ride and lots of stalls.
Daftly proud of her. Next challenge is the nails! Vets on Monday to work with the lovely lady vet we saw as an emergency.

TheAntiBoop · 29/07/2017 20:58

Good luck with the nails - I'm dreading the first time we have to do it!!

Pup definitely sees the crate as his safe space and has spent most of the day in there. He loves the garden but is otherwise very quiet

Wolfiefan · 29/07/2017 21:00

Oh it's not the first try.
Nurse visit one. Two nails cut. Upset dog.
Nurse visit two. One nail. Upset dog and told to do it myself.
Third attempt. I tried. Caught quick. Bled for an hour. Shock
