Considering giving a home to a 2 year old miniature schnauzer . I know i will be fine with all the walking etc and i work from home , kids are grown up but i have been told they tend to bark excessively , especially at other dogs when out walking . This does put me off this breed slightly so hoping for some insight here .

We've had two (and getting our third, a pup, tomorrow, excited).

They can be vocal, it's true, but not always. We have a two year old male schnauzer who barks maybe twice a week and always looks shocked at himself.

Our last one used to bark like mad through the window at anyone passing the house and at the postman but would always shut up when told.

Neither barked at other dogs out walking, if anything both were/are a bit too friendly towards other dogs.

They are great fun, loyal, love their family, intelligent but can be stubborn. Great characters, both of them.

Non dog owner here who loves miniature schnauzers.

A school run mum walks her adorable miniature schnauzer most days and he does like to make his presence known Smile. He shuts up when I get down and have a chat with him though. The mum and the lab who walks with him have a Hmm face on when he's yapping away.

My schnauzer is very vocal! Barks a greeting to every dog/cat/bird/human he sees. He has a wide range of sounds and will hold a conversation for ages. He used to howl when left until I got him a doggy friend and now he's fine. The noise is worth putting up with though as he really is the best dog ever. He's always been fantastic with my son and he's so gentle with puppies and kittens (almost maternal). Schnauzers are just lovely!

Mine hardly ever barks. She barked for about 20 minutes in the beach once for no obvious reason, other than that it's a rare event. She's a very sweet little dog.

Could you take the one you are thinking of having for a walk to check whether it's a yappy one?

missyB1 · 12/07/2017 19:09

Mine barks now and again but only a few little barks then she stops, her favourite noise is a sort of woo woo sound! She's a real character and very loving, cuddles up on the settee, likes to sit on our laps etc... She can be stubborn though and apparently that's common for the breed, but we get round that with lots of treats!
