How to help dog put on weight

Hi all,

We've adopted a rescue dog and he's been with us for a couple of weeks. He's settling in brilliantly but we need to get him to put on a bit of weight and I'm after a bit of advice as to the best way to go about this .... any ideas gratefully received, thank you 🐶

I find Tripe very good for putting on weight, its quiet stinky but dogs love itSmile Also feeding three or four times a day. How underweight is your rescue dog?

Satin balls are one approach. There are recipes on line. I've never done it though. Higher fat foods, as well.

We do 3 meals a day, with raw eggs or sardines instead of their wet food a few times a week. They normally have dry food plus wet and a slug of cod liver oil 2-3 times a week plus conditioning tablets.

If they aren't too underweight, then putting on weight gently is best, so feed to the weight you want them to be. Has a vet seen them to say how much they need to put on?

Sardines or mackerel in oil definitely works, and it's great for their skin as well. It's a slow process though, especially if they are getting loads of exercise as well.

Thank you for the replies - had totally forgotten about using sardines! He's not massively underweight, the vet just said he could do with a little more padding. Thanks again 🐶
