So it turns out my grandparents have no sense of smell.
They mentioned DDog had had a dicky tummy earlier this week and how they had been cleaning the carpet.
I turned up for my usual weekend mercy visit (I do their massive garden for them, and usually stay the night before to get an early start) and could smell a niff, which they rubbished.
And then I went upstairs to bed (their bedroom is downstairs as they can't manage the stairs anymore)....

Of course DDog doesn't normally go up there to they hadn't thought to get someone to check the landing.
Normal 30-somethings are out partying on a Saturday night. I'm cleaning dried-into-the-carpet explosive dog shit.

Any idea how to air the landing without freezing to death or risking midgies in the morning with an open window (highlands of Scotland)?

You'll have to freeze to death I'm afraid, whilst getting bitten by midgies.

Ugh, you poor thing! If you have some sterilising fluid (Milton etc) in the house then a very weak solution to clean it up should help get rid of the smell. Or white vinegar...
