How are you helping your dogs in this heat?

My dog isn't coping and refuses to be anywhere (ie indoors) where we aren't. So I'm after ideas of how you're helping your dogs please!

OP posts:
CMOTDibbler · 18/06/2017 12:21

My dogs have a paddling pool which they like, and although my dogs aren't keen, a lady I was with at an event yesterday makes towelling coats for her dogs and soaks them in cold water which keeps them lovely and cool. You could make one very easily with a hand towel (or bigger depending on dog size) and a piece of ribbon in a few minutes

Noitsnotteatimeyet · 18/06/2017 12:21

We've got him a paddling pool for the garden which he likes jumping in and out of, frozen kongs, frozen yoghurt and mashed banana 'ice creams' and keeping to the woods and river for early and late walks. He's got a double coat and his favourite time of year is winter so he does suffer in the heat ...

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/06/2017 12:23

Ours tend to lay in the wooden or stone floors. As long as they are out of the sun, and have plenty of water, I don't worry too much.

Millipedewithherfeetup · 18/06/2017 12:24

Would also suggest a doggy paddling pool ! Put an old towel in first to stop claws puncturing! Apparently if their feet are cooled down it lowers their whole body temperature !

dotdotdot3 · 18/06/2017 12:29

Same as PP - walks early and late, access to a stream, frozen Kongs etc.

I also have two of these which I use in rotation if the heat is really bad.

rizlett · 18/06/2017 12:30

towelling coats for her dogs and soaks them in cold water which keeps them lovely and cool.

I thought this actually made dogs hotter - as it traps the heat in rather than letting it out.

BarchesterFlowers · 18/06/2017 12:30

Mine is generally to be found on cold stone floors or in the shade (me too)!

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 18/06/2017 12:32

House is in darkness, wooden floors to lie on. Ice cubes regularly (called sweeties here!). Walks early in morning before the heat is too much and after 7pm when it's cooling here. May get the hose out shortly for me and the dogs!

Floralnomad · 18/06/2017 12:36

Mine spends most of his day baking in the conservatory , he's very peculiar , we have fans going in every room so he comes in every 30 minutes or so and sits in front of a fan , has a drink and then goes back to sun bathing . We used to put a pool out for him but he only likes water if it's muddy / tidal and I'm not doing that .

sobeyondthehills · 18/06/2017 12:36

My dog hates water weirdo

We dont walk him during the day, only evening and early morning and lots of ice cubes.

Plus he can lie in our bedroom, which is cool and we don't open the curtains.

At the moment he is lying on the sofa, looking at me with his big brown eyes probably wanting another ice cube.

Also I have a five year old very wet child who keeps running in and hugging him, so I assume that is helping

InflagranteDelicto · 18/06/2017 12:36

Kids helped cool the dog as they washed the car. Dog took umbrage and is now in the shade on the patio. I don't worry about her too much, house is cool, especially if I leave it shut up and curtains shut.

CiderwithBuda · 18/06/2017 12:37

I hav two labs. One black and one yellow. Yellow is usually outside in various shady spots. Black has a few shady spots she likes but she prefers to be in on cool tiled floor. Door to outside open so they can come and go as they please.

PersonalClown · 18/06/2017 12:40

Multiple fans on around the house, curtains drawn upstairs to keep some of the heat out, ice cubes in drinking bowls (that Doodle likes to eat) , frozen treats and small paddling pool of water in the garden .

I don't walk them in this heat. They are both 7 now, getting a touch of arthritis and they don't want to move too much!

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 18/06/2017 12:43

I try like hell with mine, but does he listen? Does he fuck. He is currently sprawled in the baking hot sun Hmm I keep strongarming him back inside. He's a black cockapoo so gets soooo hot too. Oddball.

Pollydonia · 18/06/2017 12:43

Lab cross here- early morning walk , lots of shade in the garden , plenty of water , ice cubes to chew on ( his favourite ) , late evening walk.

BarchesterFlowers · 18/06/2017 12:45

Mines a lab Cider, 12 yrs old and hates the heat more than she did when young. She walked for three miles at 5:30 which will do for today. I have just come outside to look for her, as expected she is in the shade. There is a bit of a breeze.

Medeci · 18/06/2017 12:49

I don't do anything special. My two large dogs tend to sleep more, they find shady places in the garden and are quite happy.
Sometimes they're not keen on going for a walk if it's hot so I don't insist.

Pollydonia · 18/06/2017 12:50

And mine had a stand in the lake for 10 mins .

Crushsick · 18/06/2017 13:08

Pretty much the same as those above. Ice cubes to crunch on, plenty of fresh cold water, fan on. I have cold tiles around the fireplace (unused in this heat obvs!) that he spends a lot of time laying on. I don't walk him in this heat other than first thing or late in the evening. He might have a mooch about in the garden. I find he sleeps more and is less active anyway.

Jaimx86 · 18/06/2017 13:35

I've made her this base in the conservatory with the door open, a fan and a cold towel to lie on.

How are you helping your dogs in this heat?
BiteyShark · 18/06/2017 13:36

Fans, lots of water to drink plus sprayed onto his paws. One walk only in the early morning when cool.

Sparrow8 · 18/06/2017 13:43

As other posters have said only walk early morning or later in the evening. The pavement can get very hot and will burn their paws. Test the floor with the palm of your hand leaving it for 30 seconds to see if it is too hot.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 18/06/2017 13:46

Spritzing them with water every now and then. They won't touch the paddling pool I bought for them! Plus I have cooking bandanas for them that get soaked in cool water - I HIGHLY recommend them. Discovered them a while back and I swear it's the only way I'm getting my old one through the heat. Plus frozen banana bits and things like that. They love them.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 18/06/2017 13:47

Sorry link for bandana in case it helps anyone:

My Springer is doing nothing to help himself! I've just brought a fan downstairs and put it by his bed. He took one look at it and promptly went outside and laid on the patio in the sun Hmm
