My dog isn't coping and refuses to be anywhere (ie indoors) where we aren't. So I'm after ideas of how you're helping your dogs please!

I tried the wet towels on them but they weren't impressed. They have cowboy bandana things, do I wet them which helped.

PlayOnWurtz · 18/06/2017 14:08

Grin it sounds like they are their own worst enemies

Nothing, house is cool and he has free access to in or out, I make sure he has a water bowl in the garden but he does love to lie in my son.

I did have to chuck him in a different garden yesterday as the toddler was chasing him and didn't want him running against his will.

Going to chuck some ice cubes at him later, he loves them.

Also, avoiding unnecessary car journeys as even with air con it gets a bit too warm.

Noitsnotteatimeyet · 18/06/2017 14:54

Cooling coats don't work with double coated dogs - ours has such a well-insulating coat that when he goes swimming in the middle of winter he gets ice crystals forming on his top coat when he gets out. The best way to keep double coated dogs cool is to cool their tummy, so cooling mats, damp towels on the floor, paddling pool etc

HandbagCrazy · 18/06/2017 15:08

We have fans, shady spots and a cool laminate floor inside. Free access to outside and inside. Plenty of water that is replaced often.
And earlier ddog1 who is black and who insists on cooking in the garden was sprayed with the hose. She was upset at first, then realised it was nice and kept coming back for more so we've done it a few times so far.

Hoppinggreen · 18/06/2017 19:28

Paddling pool, having an awning over the patio so he can be in the shade but still with me and pupcicles

BarchesterFlowers · 18/06/2017 19:58

I have decided that my old dog is pretty smart Grin. Whenever I looked for her today she was in the shade and there wasn't much about.

I am amazed at all the coats, bandanas etc., etc.. I didn't know they existed but if I thought she was too hot I would get the hosepipe out.

I have an elderly bulldog and she always finds it very tough in this weather. We use a cool coat and lots of fans. She doesn't walk anymore anyway so just lies around on the cool kitchen floor panting a lot :(

BuzzKillington · 18/06/2017 20:05

Ours hates water.

He is however, partial to a cold, wet tea towel draped across his back for a few minutes.

Lilmisskittykat · 18/06/2017 20:09

I have a bichon and today gave her a close cut to her tummy and she's been so much better now keeps lying on cool things .. paving in shade.. laminate floor etc and is coping so much better today,. Xx

HenDogismylife · 18/06/2017 20:23

Paddling pool- he can fill it up by himself now. Ice cubes in his water and he likes to steal the dropped ones. Cotton sheet in the freezer to put on the floor for him later. If only he would lie on the nice cool floor instead of on top of me 🙄

tabulahrasa · 18/06/2017 21:30

Mine doesn't do water, can't make him wet in any way, he hates it...even when he's cooking.

He's quite partial to a portable air con unit when it's hot enough though, lol.

OrlandaFuriosa · 18/06/2017 21:47

Mine normally hates water on his paws, baths etc. But he needed washing today so I took him in the shower, tepid water. He did not do the normal you're killing me and I'm ringing social services routine, he stood there patiently while I hosed him down. He then loved shaking himself all over DH. .

Queenofthedrivensnow · 18/06/2017 21:49

My cocker couldn't give a monkeys but I notice he's puffed out after 20 minutes on a walk. No midday walks only late afternoon and directly to the stream. He cannot be away from us and barks like a loon

BarchesterFlowers · 18/06/2017 21:55

😂😂😂😂

I have never had a dog that didn't do water and spent my youth bringing on young horses including hot headed things that I had to help to learn to tolerate hosepipes - the thought that something might not do hosing down hadn't crossed my mind Blush.

acornsandnuts · 18/06/2017 22:11

Ours have free access to
Our garage which only has a skylight for ventilation and is so much cooler than the rest of the house.

However I did catch my 7 year old boy dog shagging a duvet in there today which is a first. The heat must be getting to him.

tabulahrasa · 18/06/2017 22:17

"I have never had a dog that didn't do water"

Neither did I till this one, I've had varying levels of keenness, from had to be stopped disappearing out to sea to liked a paddle but not out of his depth.

This one literally flinches if one drop of rain hits him...we live in Scotland Hmm

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 18/06/2017 22:35

I stripped her, she is now soft, shiny and cool. She is cary partial to ice cubes in her water and shady walks by streams.

MotherPie · 18/06/2017 23:05

This is the only time of year I'm greatful my front room doesn't get much natural light Grin. I've got laminate flooring and have a fan on constantly. My mums dog loves a swimming pool in the garden.

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 19/06/2017 07:10

I was upset to see so many dogs on the beach in the midday sun yesterday.
It's great to have a dog friendly beach near us but just because you can take your dog on the beach doesn't mean you should in the middle of the day on the hottest day of the year so far.

Florence16 · 19/06/2017 07:21

Mine go out before 8am or after 9pm for a walk and they're not even that fussed about going currently. My youngest is hopeless and gets herself very hot but the elder two are more sensible. They generally follow us about so we have two tower fans wherever we are inside which blows some air around so there is a bit of a breeze. Big bear also likes his cool mat:

Last year DD got ours (springer) a paddling pool, but he refused to go in it! I suspect the water was too clean. He also treats ice cubes with suspicion.
Yesterday he positioned himself between the two fans in the sitting room. We just make sure he can go anywhere downstairs and outside and he moves from one place to another. He has also dug himself two holes in the garden which he lies in.

LilCamper · 19/06/2017 09:19

Our whole family is camping out in the main bedroom as there is an air con unit in there.

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 19/06/2017 13:08

The Weim toasts herself for 30 mins, comes inside and lies on the stone floor for 10 mins then heads back out again. Weims do seem to think a suntan sets off their looks! Her tummy is a particularly fine shade of pink!

The 2 crosses have dug themselves holes under DD's trampoline which is in the shade and presumably very cool.

Other than that I just have plenty of water and doors open so they can come and go as they like.

CiderwithBuda · 19/06/2017 13:12

I don't walk mine but have a lovely dog walker and she took all the dogs she walks into th woods where it's cool and they can get to water. They like wallowing!

So they came back refreshed and wet and cool and proceeded to lie outside even though door was open. Both in shade but I decided it's too hot so I've brOught them into the utility room which has a cool tiled floor.
