When do you worry about sickness and diarrhoea in your dog?

Hi,

I've got a 7 month old lab x and over the past couple of days, her stools have been really runny, with the occasional normal looking one, but she's also been sick a few times too. In herself, she seems fine.

Should I be worried? Trip to the vets? Or do I just keep an eye on her for now?

She's eating and drinking as normal.

If mine just has the runs I usually wait and see as he often has been eating stuff he shouldn't.

If he is just sick I wait and see if it is a one off which it usually is.

The fact that yours is having both the runs and vomiting would concern me more and depending on how well he was in himself or whether I suspected he might have a blockage (eats chunks of wood) or if there is mucus/blood or other things in his poo then I would phone the vets and ask for advice.

I've been 2x for broadly the same thing.

He'd be pretty unwell with a block IMO.

Vomiting - no food.
diarrhoea - chicken and rice. This is what my vet says.
If he seems v hungry I'd be tempted to give him a small bit of rice but a vet would say otherwise I suspect.

I would worry of it persists for two days or so, also if there is blood or mucus in the poo and if the dog is lethargic or off.

Both together id wait no more the 24hours i had a dog that was very ill and took her to late i dont want to be the voice of doom here but take your dog to the vet.

I would take your dog to the vets sooner rather than later. My dog has had to have two emergency operations due to a blockage. First one he ate a leather glove and the second a wooden lolly stick. It's probably going to be nothing but it will give you peace of mind. As i have found out dogs can go from being a little off to a full blown emergency situation that you didn't see coming. Hope you get on ok.

Yeah they go from fine to not quickly my dog that died had eaten a tray from chicken i had defrosted she raided the bin

Sorry about your dog Mrs. I think that some dogs are just more prone to being a bit of a thief. It literally takes them seconds to eat something that they shouldn't.

Yeah she seemed predispoded (is thatthe word) to stealing we got her from rescue at 12 weeks she was with mum and littermates well fed yet she still stole never known a dog like her, new jaydog doesn't steal and eat anyway that is why im always wary and overcautious of D&V

Called the vets and they said to wait and see how she is over the weekend.

She seems to still be her normal, bouncy, full of energy self. She's only been sick a couple of times and when I say diarrhoea, she's not going more regularly, it's just that when she does go ( disgusting description warning!! ) it's lighter, not really runny, just looser and I noticed a fair bit of mucus.

We're going away tomorrow and it's not really something we can get out of, but we're taking her with us. We were thinking about kennels, but not now obviously.

No, not at all!

She's actually on a mix of dry and wet food. Used to just be on biscuits, but seemed to get bored with that. Wet food on it's own doesn't seem to agree with her stomach, so we struck a happy medium.

Something we are wondering about, is our apple tree. There are quite a few unripened apples on the ground and I've seen her eat a few. Maybe this could have something to do with it......

Oh maybe the apples yeah a bit to much for her. Shame you will miss your weekend kennels won't take them ill will they?

My golden retriever has basically the same symptoms at the moment, like the mucus-y poo. She's well within herself and not vomiting very frequently (only 2x in about 2.5 days) so I've offered her rice, which she won't eat without chicken (although she probably will at some point).

By the way my dog loves apples and eats them frequently (I give her bits of mine) but I would imagine that an inordinate number of them would upset her stomach.

Jay, no but I wouldn't take her anyway. We're only going away for a night, but I don't want her to be away from us right now. It's not ideal to take her, but it'll have to be.

Gloria, ah, thanks. Chicken and rice seem to be a popular choice. Regarding the apples, I normally give her the last bit of my apple and she's fine with that, but I'm wondering if these are harsh on her stomach because they're not ripe.

Note that the pips in apples contain cyanide. Best avoided if at all possible.

Surprised your vet told you to wait and see over the weekend, especially as it's been going on for a few days already. I'm afraid I wouldn't be happy with that, but then I tend not to leave D & V.

As regards her mood one vet I saw about my dog told me that sometimes the dog's mood won't seem to be affected with D & V but it should still be investigated. Mucus, and blood in the stool are not always indications of major problems but can just be because of something irritating the dog's system, but your vet can't tell that without seeing your dog.

I'd definitely be seeing my vet sooner rather than later and way before the beginning of next week.
