Thinking about getting a dog

We are thinking about getting a dog but I have no idea what kind except medium/small.
DD 2 is obsessed with dogs and has been since she was small. We have been waiting until she is bigger and we moved to the seaside over a year ago.
I guess I'm asking for advice.
Background- DH works locally 9-5. I'm a sahm. Dd1 is 11 about to go to secondary and dd2 is nearly 9. We live in a flat but have a large enclosed communal garden area. I grew up with labradors so am comfortable around dogs. DH has had spaniels ,labs and jack Russels.
Any advice would be great!

OP roughly what area are you in? I know some rescues that don't care about gardens and whatnot.

He was lovely..
Very stubborn though and refused to fully toilet train. But I think that was just him and not JRT in general.

Nancy- Dorset but close to Hampshire. I've looked around and there are lots of staffie and not much else

My terrier rarely makes a sound, she surprised herself and us when she got all defensive of the borders and started to bark at someone who walked past our fence a few days ago. She hasn't done it again

My Schnauzer is perfectly cute! Here is the evidence

Schnauzers are the perfect breed in my opinion. Clever, loving, gentle. They don't moult. They will happily run for hours but be equally happy sleeping all day. Big enough for rough and tumble but still small enough to cuddle up on the sofa with.
