GPS tracker recommendations

Seriously thinking of getting one due to DDogs poor recall.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thinking I need the following features as a minimum; GPS, multiple users, smart phone app to locate dog, waterproof.

Not bothered about price but want one that works out and about in the uk (I guess anywhere there is a mobile signal).

Let us know how you get on with it.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig its ordered so will get it next week. I'll let you know how accurate it is although I did order the speed tracker and the roaming sim to help with coverage but overall 1 year subscription with everything came to just over £200 which isn't bad for peace of mind.

I know other people who use more of a Fitbit type tracker for nutrition/exercise so it might actually be useful for that as you can do the same with it.

On your final point - I've been thinking how interesting it would be to have a fitbit type device on my dog, just so I can see how much further than me he walks over a whole walk, what with all the zigzagging and to and fro walking/running he does. But couldn't find one that didn't cost a fortune or require monthly subscription.

BiteyShark · 12/05/2017 11:35

Yes it does seem to be subscription based for these things presumably because most use a phone network.

I am hoping by the time I have to renew my susbscription in a year I have either fallen in love with it because It's a gadget Grin and won't care about the cost or DDog has sorted himself out and we have good recall that I can effectively assign it to the back of a draw Grin

I'm hoping for the perfect recall. (But also very interested to know how the gadget works out in case I'm ever in the position to let huge hound off in public! Shock)

If he's been good and just started running off in the last few weeks, is it possible there's a bitch in heat somewhere he can smell? If you've had him done then probably not.

Think you're right and it's the terrible teens. I used the Pippa Mattinson Total Recall book too. The proofing part is great. Good luck.

Mixed feelings on the tracker. I have areas where we just have 3G and my app doesn't work very well but I guess that is my phone coverage issue rather than the trackers which uses a roaming sim.

In the house the tracker shows the dog in my house but apparently sometimes I am next door Grin. The accuracy isn't perfect but I think would be enough to help find him assuming both him and me with a phone signal. I have a garmin gps tracker for my bike and compared to that the bike one is so much better but then the price was so much more Grin

I think I will still use it as I have attached it to his walking collar (just need to remember to charge it every day) and if the worst ever happens then I have something to go on.

any good GPS tracker devices you can recommend?

BiteyShark · 29/05/2017 08:07

Unfortunately I am just about to write to the company I got mine from as it seemed ok at first but just been for a long walk where I had 4g but nothing on the app for his location for the entire walk and I reset it twice Sad

I looked into the GPS as I have a working terrier who has a habit of disappearing down rabbit holes. Obviously GPS doesn't work underground though!

The GPS on dogs collars work using mobile phone data (triangulation from masts) whereas a walkers (or bikers) GPS uses satellite data. A bit like your mobile phone, the GPS on that is only ever any good in urban areas.

It seems I am destined to spend my life waiting for him to come out of holes!
