Do you talk to your dog? and if so, what about? General dog stuff, re food, bed time etc, or actual conversations...

Sadly my dog passed away a year ago. I used to talk to him all the time.

His photo has pride of place in the lounge and I say something to him every day still mad dog woman

Really want a dog, but really I want mine back and I know I can't have that:( Can't bring myself to get another just yet

Forgot to add, I talk about everything from what I need to do, what I'm going to do, ask her how she is, if the cats are annoying her-then agree with her-
DP is exactly the same!
I sing to her too!

Of course, otherwise he would think I was being rude!

I chat to him as I'm doing things like emptying the washing machine, (he'll usually be trying to get under my legs) I'll say things like "oops, watch out baby, beep beep, I need to open the door, good boy. Oh, I need the basket, where's the basket? Where is it? Under the table, silly mummy!! Beep beep (it means move out of my way and he understand it ) good man, ok let's go out, where's your toy? Get your toy. Good boy, go get it. Watch out, you're in my way, beep beep."

that's pretty much how most of our conversations go.

Oh and we also gang up on the cat together. The cat is a bold cat and tortures the dog so we sit and discuss how we should put him in the bin or not give him any dinner.

We talk to them all the time and we sing songs to them and my DH makes up songs about them to sing to them. Sometimes we just sing their name over and over but to a tune IYSWIM especially at Christmas! They also have loads of nicknames and they answer to all of them. A nickname for one sounds a bit like the actual name of the other so they both come running when we shout that one. We are weird but luckily have no immediate neighbours

All the time. About everything. To be fair, she is the only one who takes any notice of me here . I sing to her too. And rock her like a baby. She loves it. (I know she isn't a real baby!)

Decker .

All the time. Just about stuff - anything and everything. A bit like I used to speak to DS when he was a baby and I'd see things on our walks - "Look a robin" or "look at all the butterflies on that bush".... and usual random nonsense too - "is it tea time?" and "where shall we go on our walk this morning?" I'm not expecting her to reply though, that would be strange!

All the other dog owners I know chat away to their dogs

I do all the time, mostly dog things,like it's a lovely day where shall we go? (We always go to the same place as they don't like change)

Whose cute, handsome, clever etc. they don't answer back of course They also know when you are upset, their "cure" for this is usually a paw followed by the "where's my biscuit" look

Zilphas that's exactly how I feel, it would be rude if I didn't! Im new to being a dog mummy - just wanted to check im not turning completely bonkers 😜 Aawww Decker we've only had ours a week and already I can't imagine being without her 😞

I spend a lot of time at home alone with just the dog. I chatter away to her constantly. She is great company as she never disagrees with me.

Yes. I also talk back as the dog when my husband talks to him, so they can have a proper two way conversation.

Tabard are you me? all of ours have a song. I was getting annoyed because I couldn't find a last line for the new girls song......I found it. My nieces and nephews know all the songs and I may have made them sing along. They are all in tune to nursery rhymes. Yes I am really that sad. We also have so many nicknames I have to sometimes think who are you. Ha.

OP so yes, I have full on conversations with all the dogs. Absolute mad house.

I talk to her all the time. It would feel weird if i didnt.

I often ask her opinion on stuff as well.

All the time. When we used to go out to socialise her before her jabs I would sit with her in the boot (too big to carry) and point things out.
"Look that's a bicycle. Can you see the big lorry. That car's going past. We don't want to go near cars do we? Aren't those children noisy? That's a runner. We don't chase them!"

I'm finding this thread really reassuring as I talk to my dog all the time about all sorts of stuff. She doesn't actually answer :) me but she does respond, like most dog's will: where's you ball gets her finding her ball, does your tummy need a rub makes her roll over etc.

I do find myself feeling a bit sometimes when we're out and I realise I've been chatting away to her, in case someone's heard me.

Life would be very boring for them if we didn't talk to them, I think they need to hear the sound of a loving voice.

And they talk to us in their own way. My dog has different barks for different needs: e.g. when she needs to go into the garden for a wee she will give one quiet bark to let me know; so I supposed she talks to me too.

Mine obviously doesn't understand every word but she certainly understands a lot. She was whining to go out yesterday and I asked her to wait a moment whilst I started the washing machine. Literally a second. She went quiet and waited patiently.
Please no flaming. If she's being a pain in the arse. (Rare). She responds to "go the fuck to bed." I don't shout at her but she seems to know it is code for that's enough now.

Often threaten her with the sausage factory for barking.
Neighbours must wonder about my state of mind at times. .

Yes! I lost my lovely dog quite a few years ago, he was the first "person" I told when I found out I was pregnant. We have an elderly cat and I talk to him all the time. One of the lovely things about owning a pet, you can never argue with them and they never say any hurtful words!

Of course, and she understands every word.
