Gundog training book recommendations?

Morning!
I'm after recommendations for a good book on gundog training for our cocker puppy. There are so many on Amazon that it's quite mind-boggling, and I have no idea which one might be best for teaching a pup (and us!) the basics, before starting more 'formal' gundog training when he's older.

Hi OP, how old is your dog?

I do gun dog training with my 7 month old and did a puppy course with them as well so you can find places that take young dogs.

Other than that I paid for a book which I ordered from a gun dog training site. Will post details later.

Training retrievers with Nigel Mann not a new book but really good for training any dog, gundog or not.

If you PM me or if you are happy to give a rough area of where you are on here I can let you know if you are close to the trainers I use as they are brilliant.

Why not have a poke around on the BASC (British Assosiation of Shooting and Conservation) site?

Right I got my books from thegundogclub.co.uk but I would recommend trying to find a trainer as soon as you can because there are certain things I am having to correct with my dog that I did at home as a puppy that are not helping now with things such as retrieve. For example as a puppy I rewarded bringing me his ball with a treat so now he drops the retrieve dummy thinking he is getting food when I actually want him to keep hold of it Sad

Pippa Mattinson has written books and specialises in gun dogs - all very good, practical advice

Another vote for Pippa Mattinson's books - very clear and with the dog's best interests at heart

DH used Training the Roughshooter's Dog by PRA Moxon. It's old, first published in 1977, and I don't know how well it fits in with today's beliefs on dog training, but DH found bits of it really good for our working gundogs.

The Pet Gundog by Lez Graham
It is absolutely brilliant for anyone with a working breed

I've been training spaniels for a long time and many of the best books have been around for a while. You'll find a good list of resoures at
www.easyspanieltraining.com which will help.

There's also a helpful FB page called Gundog Training for Novices. I've had some good advice from there.

Joe Irving book - available on Amazon. Aimed at spaniels and I have used it for springers - brilliant. Not sure if it is good for other breeds but I can't see why not.
