But anyone else can pile in me course, as having read the messages especially on new pup thread you ladies are all experienced. And ahead of me! So pup has been in crate overnight and is very upset. Whining and howling Alot, but I am not sure what approach to take. Try to make sure she has done toilet before bed, last feed is at 5. But sometimes hasn't gone for a poo, so please soils her bed. If she is crying cos she needs a poo should I be going down there. I'm confused as that's attention to crying. Or do I feed her earlier? Can you tell I'm a tad frazzled?? Would love to hear your doggy help.thankyou so much

There are lots of different approaches you can try.

I ignored the crying ONLY when I knew my puppy did not need to toilet so at night if he cried I would take him outside without saying a thing to him. If he did not toilet he would be placed back in the crate. If he cried again I would repeat. When he did toilet outside I knew he did not need to go again so ignored any whimper as then he would settle himself to sleep for a bit. On the next cry I would repeat as above.

This meant his crying did not really get attention as it was outside for toilet and back in crate with no fuss or playing. I also made sure I set alarms to wake him at set intervals and take him out so as he got older he got toileted before waking and crying.

When he was bigger and I knew when the crying was just for attention and not for the toilet I ignored it and he would settle within 30 mins but again some people do not like that approach but it worked for me.

Oh I wouldn't actually worry about thinking that we are all experienced on the puppy thread. Mine is in teenage mode but I STILL remember the early puppy days. Also there are a few newcomers who are exactly at the point you are. Even those that are a bit ahead will have the benefit of hindsight so even though you have your own thread I would also recommend joining the other as well so you have ongoing support to help you in the next few months.

Hi biteyshark thankyou for your tips. I will be following the other threads for wisdom and woes too! Your advice about the night is welcomed, not sure I would know if the next cry was for a wee if she'd done a poo or vice versa iyswim, she's a bright little thing of 12 weeks who has me wondering each time she whines. In the day she moans Alot and I am trying to ignore the whinging but ad mindful of her actual needs. God I am tired tho. What time should her last meal be? It would be great to know poo timescales!

I am not aware of any guidance on feeding times. I did three meals at that age so morning lunch and early evening. I did find that mine would take a good hour after feeding to poo and this was always helped by a play session.

Join FB group dog training advice and support.
They have a great session on crates and also toilet training.
He's a baby. You can't just stick him in the crate. I slept with mine for three weeks. Next to her crate.
Toilet means taking out after food, sleep, play and regardless every 20 minutes or so regardless. Praise when pup goes outside.

Agree with wolf about take out after just about anything, play, food etc to give them an opportunity to toilet. After a while I got to know mine would need to poo around an hour after food whilst others it can be straight away so give them more opportunities than they need at this age to toilet (also means less accidents to clean up inside )

Our dear departed jrt hated being on his own downstairs as a puppy. After two nights of crying we moved him upstairs next to us and he never made another peep. As for housetraining, it was summer and he could bimble round the garden all day, and was scooted outside if he looked like squatting. Perhaps we were just lucky, but by the end of summer he was totally clean. He hated his crate though, so we rarely used it. They are very opinionated and intelligent dogs that like and need plenty of mental stimulation. He loved hunting for hidden toys. Why don't you try having him sleep where he can see you? How long is he being crated for? You will get to know how long after eating he usually needs to poo (our current puppy is within 10 minutes), and stick to regular feed times and amounts, this will help to regulate his bowels. You will get to know his body language in time. I love jrts, wonderful dogs.

Hi thankyou. She had breakfast at seven today and still no poo! We've been out for a 20 min walk too. Very good bless her, but didn't poo. Said hello to a few people, passed lots of traffic very well. Maybe I should have her upstairs at night if she's that upset. I have faith that she is doing her best tho, just very clingy and I don't want to let her down one way or another. Have a child with mental health issues who I need to support too, but the joy from her toward the dog is immense. Still reading the puppy thread. It's very nice to read about all your experiences and is making me feel more human.

How old is she?

Sorry, I kept referring to your do as he, not she. What are you feeding her? I just wondered if she is a bit constipated. How many times a day does she poo?

Hi she's 12 weeks. It was three or four for few days yesterday three. One last night and still nothing today! Very runny for first two days but put that down to nerves. Last night's was soft,not hard at all.

Careful not to overdo the walking. Think advice is 5 mins per month of age.
Has she had all her jabs.
If she came from a different area the change of water could upset her tum.
She may not poo if she was off her food when she first came home. If that makes sense!

Yes all jabbed, that's a point she has come from 100 miles away. Result of two fantastic poo after tea! Poo police I am. Feeling calmer this evening. Will make sure her walks are not too long.
