Can I have a hand hold please? Dog has growth in face

My beautiful 11yo SBT who Ive had since she was 8 weeks old has been pawing at her face for about 4 weeks, after the first few days of this I took her to the vet who thought it was some bad teeth so those were removed. She was wiped out by the GA but when it wore off that night she started pawing again.

3 weeks later and many AB's, painkillers, eye drops, Piriton etc we had a referral to an eye specialist as her eye has been bulging out a little so then I thought it must be an eye problem.

The eye specialist did various tests and believes that she has a growth either behind her eye or in her nose/sinuses. She has a CT scan next week to see exactly what it is, where it is and how we can deal with it, if it can be dealt with. Shes also had a blood test which Im waiting for the results.

She is my first proper dog as a grown up as Ive always been a cat person and shes stolen the last bit of my heart that was reserved for my pets.

Im heartbroken. Its taken me by surprise how upset I am, shes such a good dog, has never even so much as white-eyed me, I swear shes actually got a sense of humour and knows when Im sad and her eyes light up when a kid (or anyone!) shows her a bit of attention.

My poor girl, she was supposed to end her days in her sleep in her dog bed (or my bed!!) all tucked up and warm, now all I can vision is her being in pain and me having to make the awful decision to PTS in a cold clinical vet room that she hates so much.

Sounds perfect Grin

mustiwearabra · 12/05/2017 13:10

Joining the gang to give you some support. Please feel free to natter away on here whenever you need. We look forward to stories of her gas haha.

isupposeitsverynice · 12/05/2017 13:15

She doesn't need to know your name to know she loves you. You're right to talk to the kids and prepare them a little bit. We didn't have time for that this time and it's been harder on them than when we had our old gsd put down a couple of years ago. Having said that they've still coped much better than me who cried while brushing my teeth last night so dh wouldn't hear me Hmm

MollyMooDog · 12/05/2017 13:32

Oh the gas........its eye watering! She had some cooked sausages bought for her by a shop owner in the village near where dp walks her and they are definitely working their way through Grin

Isuppose - I think they will cope with it pretty well after the initial shock. they are 8 and 5 so old enough to know but I'm hoping young enough to be able to be distracted and have their minds occupied. I just can't have them only know how bad it is right before the end when us, the adults, have had weeks, poss longer to come to terms with it. Just doesn't seem right. So sorry for your recent loss Flowers

Hi Molly, so glad she's still living the life !
Yes, I agree with you, you should tell the children, so that they are allowed to process their thoughts.
If it helps in any small way, when my children were very young like yours, I told them that sometimes we can't fix broken, but for every little dog, who passes away, somewhere a new one is born.
Sending you a mahoosive hug, and continued strength, she's so very lucky to have you. 🌺

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 12/05/2017 14:17

Sending love to you too ISUPPOSEITSVERYNICE 🌺

I had a darling little Staffy Molly, she was my shadow.
RIP sweet little Tessie, she was a piggy too. 😄

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 12/05/2017 20:44

Pressed too soon 🙄
Meant to add, what a beautiful girl you've got there, give her a gentle scratch from me x

I've just told the kids. They had such a lovely day at school yesterday I couldn't spoil it.

Ds1 took it a bit badly but then, after we had a bit of a chat, asked if we'd be getting another one which I expected and think that's pretty normal for a kid to say. I think it was more that hes loved having a doggie friend and in his own little way is comforted by the idea that we can have another one. Atm I can't even think that I'll have another dog ever again after this but there again I've seen how much having a dog has helped them develop into the caring little souls they are. I did say I think when the time is right it would be lovely to honour her by giving another doggie a wonderful life and our love. But as I say I can't even contemplate it right now.

Ds2 I don't think he has understood just yet but when she comes back from her walk and he sees her I think it will sink in.

Have let them both go on their game, bit early I know but sod it, happy that they are distracted for the time being.

Purpleknickers · 14/05/2017 21:25

That must have been hard to do, you never want to break your kids hearts ever.
Yes it is normal to think about another one, not a replacement ever but a little one to heal your hearts ♥️

MollyMooDog · 16/05/2017 08:35

I've found a lady on etsy who does plush caricatures of pet dogs, they look absolutely gorgeous so I'm just about to send her some pics to get 3 made up, one for the dc each and one for me. I know a mid 30's woman spending money on a stuffed animal is tragic but I think it will nice for dp aswell, just a nice way of remembering her, I'll keep it sat in Molly's place on the settee :)

She's still doing ok, her 3rd eyelid is looking a bit red but apart from that she's still fine in herself. I came home from work early yesterday, think I've been generally run down and caught a horrid cough/cold and a bit of a stomach bug so I spent 3 hours on the settee with her resting her head on my feet, I needed a wee for ages but didn't want to disturb her!

You have given her a lovely life, you love her and that will never change. I feel for you, when we lost our gorgeous Bearded Collie, also to tumours, some years back at 13, we knew when the time was right to PTS, we were all devastated, as others have said the worst part of pet ownership, sadly a dog isn't for life. So sorry OP make the most of whatever time is left.

Yogagirl123 · 16/05/2017 08:56

Forgot to say, you can ask a vet to come to you when the times right

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 16/05/2017 08:57

Thinking of you all OP.

mustiwearabra · 16/05/2017 10:36

It isn't in the slightest bit ridiculous to have portraits done. I'm glad she seems comfortable.

MollyMooDog · 25/06/2017 11:09

My lovely friend was pts on Monday.

Am absolutely heartbroken. Keep forgetting and looking for her, going to let her out for a wee, giving her a bit of chicken.......checking on her when I go for a wee in the night......can't believe it. She's gone, my lovely Molly is gone and I feel like someone is squeezing my heart.

Night night Molly. Missing you so much xxx
