suspected renal failure

Dh just woken up with wet feet. Dog has weed all over the bed is laying in a big patch of urine. He's literally weed himself and hasn't even moved. I'm so broken hearted.

Dog spent all day at the vet yesterday as he's not been eating, drinking lots and peeing all hours of the night dog has me up more times per night than baby. Second visit in a week to vet so they did blood tests and it shows nothing good. He's dehydrated despite his urine being diluted and he is now only eating when injected with ranitidine.

I think tomorrow is going to be his last day. He's only four and I have a new 4 month old baby. It wasn't supposed to happen like this

I guess when the vets send you home with the emergency out of hours number it's not a good thing

Aww I'm so sorry to hear this. Is their any chance it could be something simple ?
My 2 year old Labrador went through a stage of wetting himself. He would wet on the bed and just stay their. Or wet the dog bed and not move. He is a very happy healthy chap now. He was abit unwell at the time xx

It doesn't look hopeful. He's hardly eaten for two weeks. Took him to the vet again yesterday and they took bloods. They called me urgently an hour later asking me to bring him back. He's spent the day with them and has just come home overnight before coming back tomorrow.

She said options are cancer (which she thinks is unlikely), a tumour or renal failure

Have you tried him on chicken, meat etc? I have a really fussy dog, hopefully everything is ok. Sending lots of hugs. Please update me as to how he is? They aren't just pets they're family. X

We've tried turkey and he gingerly ate a little. We've wet his food with gravy, tried all sorts. The ranitidine injection he had last week helped him eat for two days but then he stopped again, hence the trip back to the vets yesterday. They gave him a couple of doses throughout the day and he ate loads apparently.

We have to drop him back to the vets again at 8.40. They went from yesterday morning "it's all ok, just routine." to an hour later "come in urgently" and then by the end of the day it was just "let's just wait and see"

The vet said prognosis is 'guarded'

I've not slept since the baby woke me at 3am. Interestingly the baby is still asleep now!

Not really any additional news. His levels are stable and results from te corsidol test came back clear. They want to do another blood test tomorrow to see if he has a problem with how his body handles the corsidol. If that's clear then it's definitely renal.

Know sometimes when you wonder whether it's worth it? I feel like it's all these tests for nothing. My instinct tells me it's not good.

I don't even know if the insurance will cover it yet as they only tell you after you've spent the money!

We had my baby boy pts on Thursday evening the results came back and it was cancer. Blood results were so high that the vet didn't even offer to let us have the weekend with him. She said 'tonight when its quiet or bring him back tomorrow'

We were blessed with a happy, playful final walk. He was so perky because the medication and iv drip had given him a boost. Problem was, every night when we brought him home he went downhill so rapidly. I think his kidneys were falling. The vet said he wasn't far from complete organ failure.

It's heartbreaking to put down any animal but my boy looked so fit and healthy right up to the end. It's so weird that inside his body was fading fast because his last afternoon he seemed almost perfect. The vet said it wasn't really genuine though because it was just the meds and fluids.

I feel like I'm trying to justify myself. How do you wrap your head around a dog looking so healthy and being so ill. Such a quick decline. I feel like I've pts a perfectly healthy dog but I know that's not true

I'm so sorry at least he had a lovely last walk with you, it's so much better for him to have slipped away while feeling happy and loved rather than waiting for his body to pack up completely - such a hard thing for you to go through though

You guys are right. I just can't get my head around the fact that it all happened so quickly. There were subtle signs but apart from that he seemed so well. He went from relatively healthy to being dependant on a drip. But he still looked so well. The vet was adamant that he wasn't well. She basically said he wouldn't have lasted the weekend without the drip every day

Oh I am so sorry. I'm sitting here blubbering at my laptop reading this. It's so heartbreaking.

Take care of yourself. It's one of the hardest things in the world. Rest in peace to your beautiful boy.

The house feels so quiet.

My mum came for the weekend and hoovered. The dog hairs are gone - I'd do anything to have them back. DH binned his bed. I agreed but that seemed like the hardest bit. We have an alcove under the stairs that he used to sleep in and now it's empty

How can such a poorly dog want to run around so much and play so much ball. It feels like he was pts too soon, even though I know that's not true

At the moment you are in shock and grieving. I hope in time you can get some comfort that he didn't suffer and you gave him a lovely last walk. Until then you need to be kind to yourself and allow yourself to grieve over a much loved member of the family

I'm so sorry OP :( How devestating. 4 is too young for a dog but I am so glad that his 4 years were spent with his family who so obviously loved him so much and so deeply. He will have known that...and though his time was short, it was spent happy and loved.

It's weird. You notice it most when someone knocks on the door and there's barking. When you come home and he's not there to greet you. When you accidentally drop a carrot or something there's no one to eat it up.

I opened a tin of tuna yesterday and there was no dog to tell off for trying to get it.

We walked down to vote yesterday and it was a very sedate and lonely walk without him.

The little things are when I realise he's gone and it's the little things I miss the most.
