Maybe the people on the puppy survival thread would like to hide this one! Anyone else got their hands full?

Oh dear. Here, have a Wine.

Cocobananas · 27/04/2017 20:27

Bitey, I think you do lots of obedience training en route with walks, keep going with wait and come , lie down and have a breather, drop treats and then go again. Try training in an emergency stop,I have realised that Cocopup likes to chase a ball on certain walks and keeping it in my pocket as a good distraction at any time is working well. She managed to not chase a rabbit this morning because I squeaked her ball but that was in a place where she has never come across rabbits before so I don't know how that would play out in open fields. I do a lot of impulse training as well as fun searching for treats and toys and general tug and fetch.

BiteyShark · 27/04/2017 20:40

I think I had let him get a bit too far from me this time and he had clearly picked up a scent so he had got himself into a hunting frenzy which was much more fun than my treats. I did still reward him when he eventually came back with a small treat but put him straight back on his lead to calm him down. My heart did skip a few beats though when I could not hear or see him after several whistle commands.

I am not sure whether a squeaky toy would be enough to engage him but its worth a try so will put one in my pocket for his next walk so thanks for the tip.

Cocobananas · 27/04/2017 22:37

Although Cocopup likes to play in the garden, she didn't seem that concerned about balls and I don't want her ball obsessed. BUT we meet a friendly lab at the park who has shared his ball playing with her on and off for a while now, She has various toys in the garden but not squeaky tennis ball(Kong). I keep squeaky tennis ball in my pocket for emergency distraction use...don't know why but at the moment it really works. I let her have a short play with the ball on every third walk or so and then for distraction. Nothing would distract her from a scent a couple of months ago but a lot of being on a long line, games en route and not being allowed to chase anything but a ball or a canine pal has helped immensely. Other thing to keep as special distraction might be a proper rabbit fur tuggy? I know what you mean about heart skipping beats when they disappear, worst part of puppy ownership I feel.

BiteyShark · 28/04/2017 06:51

He does have the squeaky kong tennis balls at home but we don't play with them much so I might try one of them first, otherwise I will be on amazon looking for a 'special' toy :)

missyB1 · 28/04/2017 07:05

I find frankfurters or roast chicken are my saviour when stubborn miss does a runner, I blow the whistle and screech treeeeeet and suddenly from nowhere she is suddenly hurtling towards me Grin

BiteyShark · 28/04/2017 07:11

missy that used to work but yesterday even though he knew I had cheese, hot dog sausages and crunchy fish he still did not want to come back :( he was definitely having more fun hunting whatever it was.

We are going away for a few days and he is going to stay with the person who looks after him when I am out so I have a couple of days to recover from his disappearing act but as soon as he is back I am going to have to reinforce all the obedience work again Grin

BiteyShark · 28/04/2017 07:17

Actually I tell a fib, DDog is going away for a few days but I am staying at home to chill ;) we decided we needed a bit of a break as the puppy months have been full on and DDog loves the person looking after him so win win Grin

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 28/04/2017 07:31

I have a ball theif. She stole from a shar pai last weekend and that didn't end well ( she didn't get attacked, more sat on) so thought it may teach her a lesson, no within two mins she stole from a spaniel and legged it. This was on a five mile stretch of open beach with a lot of off lead dogs. Luckily pup was so proud of her bounty she ran straight to show me Grin.
On the beach like that she loves saying hello to all the other dogs which is fine as some play some snarl and some sit on her. It's when she says hello the owners that I get embarrassed - jump, jump, jump - most get it and don't talk to her which means she will leave them, it's the ones that make a fuss over her that makes it a lot worse. She comes away but then runs back for more. It is the sort of beach where there are no on lead dogs so she isn't causing a problem anymore than any of the other dogs on the beach it's just apparent that she is the only teenager Hmm

missyB1 · 28/04/2017 07:41

Bitey we do that now and again too, just put pup into board for a weekend to have a break, I need the rest!

applesareredandgreen · 28/04/2017 09:57

Bitey I recently bought a ball for my pup which has raised rubber spikes on the outside, a light on the inside and a very loud squeak. Normally use it inside the house or garden but he absolutely loves it and will happily sit chewing to make it squeak (no good if you are trying to concentrate on TV or have conversation though ...)

Also recently bought a 'green and wild' toy which seems to be made of suede, he's had it 2 weeks now which is a recent record as other supposedly tough toys have lasted 10 minutes.

Unfortunately Yesterday i also found DS first teddy (kept for sentiment) sitting on his bedroom floor surrounded by the white fluffy filling Sadhoping I can repair!

BiteyShark · 28/04/2017 10:13

I think I do need to go down the route of a special distraction toy for walking which is not used for retrieve etc.

apples good luck with the repair :(

missy I think I will miss my dog more than he misses me but at least we can do a few things at home and visit friends more easily than if he was here :)

fessmess · 28/04/2017 10:27

Mine's nearly 7 months and no sign yet of the rebellion. With recall I sometimes have to reinforce it with acting like a look with waving arms and pretending to run away. She will then come, amuses all the other people in the rec too.

Cocobananas · 28/04/2017 14:14

Wolf, my teenager will approach another dog on a walk when off lead and if it isn't interested in her will then jump all over its owners. She is the size of a cocker spaniel and very cute so most don't mind. I wish they did and ignored her...I never seem to be quite quick enough to get a lead on😕
Bitey, missy...Cocopup also going to respite care end of next week although as I am a florist with two weddings next weekend don't think I am going to get much rest.
Fessmess, I am really looking forward to the day we can go down to the park and be the ones smiling indulgently at a pups antics and wincing at the owners attempts to get pup to behave😙

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 28/04/2017 18:11

Just been to the vet as pup has been chewing on her front paw for a week and a bit lame. I couldn't find anything in her pad and neither could the vet but he gave her some loxicom and enforced rest - not easy with a 7 month old irish terrorist.

It would be much easier if everyone ignored puppies when they bounce up but I can understand why they don't, there is something so endearing about a friendly pup. At least her manners with other dogs are impeccable apart from stealing balls that is she immediately takes a hint if they are unfriendly/grumpy/just not interested and bounces off somewhere else.

I have just spent three nights away from pup and it has nearly broke my heart, I understand why you would like a break but, oh my, it's hard!

BiteyShark · 28/04/2017 18:40

wolf I have a sneaky suspicion that DDog will be having such a time of his life he won't miss me. Me on the other hand misses him all the time.

Sorry to hear about your pup. Hope he gets better. They always seem to give us something to worry about.

sulee · 28/04/2017 21:06

I initially missed this thread as I thought you meant human teenage years! I have a one year old rescue terrier. I took him on after my elderly JRT passed away as my family convinced me not to have another oldie. God I wished I hadn't listened. He is a nightmare. Everything is 90 miles an hour and a huge game....Wish I could fast forward a few years!!!

sulee · 28/04/2017 21:12

I need this thread! I rescued a one year old after my elderly JRT passed away. My family persuaded me to have a young dog...OMG.. wish I could fast forward a few years. He is hyper, a tornado on four legs!!!

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 28/04/2017 23:06

Hi Sulee, you are welcome. I'm not sure we can help but we really can empathise Grin.

BiteyShark · 29/04/2017 06:19

sulee mine is a whirlwind when we take him out or when he meets anyone new but fortunately he is calm in the house and garden. Is yours manic all the time?

jugotmail · 29/04/2017 09:36

Ok so season is now confirmed. Toral tart on our walk yesterday giving it submissive pose (first time ever) and come and get me eyes. Now loopy doing laps, panting, weeing every five minutes and the look in her eyes its as if she is high! The only thing calming her is a million pigs ears and chew treats. Not much spotting but im not looking forward to this week as it ramps up. On the plus side she hasnt found any wood to chew in the last few days (not that iv found anyway)

dancelikenoneiswatching · 30/04/2017 08:57

I feel like I have found my place reading all these stories.
My dog has turned into a nightmare at 14 months he's growling at dogs when we go for a walk, he pulls me along at such speed I feel like I'm going to fall over and all the advice is so conflicting ☹️

Cocobananas · 30/04/2017 11:25

This isn't teenage behaviour as such but do any of your dogs not play with toys on their own? Mine chews her antlers indoors and will throw and prance around the garden with her outdoor toys. But will only play tuggy and fetch with me with her soft toys otherwise ignores them. I keep putting them on her day bed or in the living room near to where she is lying but no interest.

BiteyShark · 30/04/2017 13:18

Coco mine tends to play on his own with his toys a few time in the day but usually only when he is in the garden but otherwise he tends to not bother with them much now.

applesareredandgreen · 30/04/2017 17:57

How are dogs supposed to play with their soft toys? The only thing my dog does is chew them up. As a younger puppy he would either ignore them or chew them a bit e.g. He liked chewing on his kong teddy but the last couple of months he has eagerly bit of faces, legs etc then chewed his way through the stitching- result he looks simultaneously pleased with himself for killing it, but disappointed and puzzled the toy is no longer there to chew.
