Has anybody had a good experience with a rescue dog?

We were planning to buy a Pomeranian from a breeder.
However, in our local rescue a pair of dogs have been giving me heart eyes and I'm falling in love. Their background is that apparently an old lady passed away leaving her Pomeranian and Westie x Lhasa Apso, 3 years old and 4 months respectively. No family members wanted the dogs, so they sent them to the local rescue . They would prefer them to be rehomed together but they can be rehomed separately. I've never rescued before because our Alaskan Klee Kai, Bear and Finnish Lapphund, Leo are fairly rare dogs and we had been on lists for years before we got our pups. DH thinks we should go for it and so do I but I just want some reassurance that people get rescue dogs and are better for it. My sister is horrified that we are planning on rehoming both (can't bear to pass them both up and we did want a puppy) but oh well, her pugs and basset hound annoy me anyway.

We rescued a bichon frise in similar circumstances where the elderly owner had died. The dog was old as well approx 9 when we got her so we only had her a few years but she was a lovely dog we had no problems at all with her and she had a very happy old age with us and wasnt bothered with the change from living with an elderly lady to living with kids and several cats.

I have a rescue dog and he has been the most fantastic and loving dog I have ever met. He came practically trained and I could see his personality from day one so could tell he would fit right in.

The rescue we have had from a puppy however is horrendous and i know I would not have touched him with a barge pole had I seen him as an adult!

We've had our lab x collie for 9 years now. He is beautiful, gentle, calm and loving soul. We had him before kids came along and he has been kind and patient with both. Got him as a 1 to 2 year old ish (stroppy teen in dog years!) and we didn't know his background. Fair to say it takes some time with training at first as he was terrified of the world, but yours will be young ish and hopefully already have the basics and from a lady who cared about them. They sound lovely! I'd rescue again definitely.

Our first dog was the runt of a litter from a breeder who had treated him badly and our second dog was an 18 month old rescue from Battersea. Would always go for a rescue dog :)

I took a rescue out for the day - I do it as a way to give them a break from kennels and see how they are in a home environment. This particular one got home, clambered on the sofa and slept all day
I posted photos on FB and my friend said "when I get a dog he is what I want"
A week later she adopted him and he's been absolutely fab, such a happy dog

We've got a rescue greyhound (our second) and she is lovely. Very gentle, no bother really. Just a bit of a scaredy when it comes to lots of noise/people.

Me! We got a rescue staffy before we had dc and she has been the most amazing gift. She really is a dog in a million.

She has adored our dc from the moment they were born and is just full of love and affection. There is honestly no love like the love you get from a rescue dog. We knew ours would be a handful (traumatic background and bolshy behaviour!) but we fell in love with her and it was so rewarding to see her progress with her training. Go for it, if they are the right fit for you then you could make such a difference in their little lives

I've had 3 adult rescue dogs all absolutely super no problems whatsoever.

Forgot to add, we have had her for 11 years now and she is 14 years old and we have never regretted one day of having her.

Yep, very successful adoption here in this house. She's beautiful and has the most lovely personality. She's just so.... NICE! She's easy (albeit demanding constant entertainment when she's not asleep!) and very well behaved. Trying hard to find a fault.

Oh, she's just started barking.... again. That's the only 'fault' although she will shut up when told!

Please give a rescue dog/s a chance and don't encourage breeders.

I've had a few, all lovely. The good thing is, you can get to meet them as they are, not a puppy but a proper dog so you'll know if you have a real connection with them. Go meet them! I had a wonderful spanish podenco with long hair, she looked like the dragen from the never ending story, with big pointy ears! . . Kids loved her and she was an angel with them. I also had a dachshund mix and another small houndy-lurchery type doggy, ever so sweet.

Number 1 hadn't been out the kennels for 2 years. She got in the door and did this bizarre happy prancing for about an hour like "a house! It's a house! OMG!" And I cried because it was so rewarding

Number 2 came home with me for a day as he was aggressive with women (he wasn't really) and flopped on the floor. I took him back and he refused to get out the car "I stay here now"

We have a Springer spaniel we adopted last year. She lived with a family who had another dog, the couple split up and she put both dogs up for rehoming.

She's a lovely dog, house trained, not destructive and very cuddly. She did bark in the night while she was settling in but she's fine now. The worst that can be said about her is that if you're reaching for a ball she'll go and grab it (we're trying to train that out of her) and she does pull on her lead sometimes. She also loves lying down in muddy puddles.....

I think we were very lucky with her and we wouldn't be without her now, even though the inside of the car is a bit mucky now!

Yes. My darling girl in the picture. We had nearly 17 years together and she died in January. I can still barely believe she's gone. Never regretted giving her a home, not once.

My rescue JRT. He was pts 4 years ago now due to dementia and cancer but he was my baby.

He had a little attitude to him and we had some toileting problems but he was a really brilliant little dog

This girl here was the absolute love of my life. I got her from the RSPCA when she was 5 and had her until December last year, when she died at the grand old age of 15. She was without a shadow of a doubt the funniest, sweetest, kindest dog I've ever met and my life was improved so much just by having her in it.

Go for it! Both my dogs came from rescue. It is such a fab thing to do.

I have one that was a private rehome aged six months and one that was from a breed rescue aged three. Both have gone on to, independently of each other, take us to two separate European championships in a dog sport. My life is infinitely better for having them in it. Not bad for two dogs that nobody else wanted. :)

Yep. Two very successful rescues in my home. I adore them. Had the eldest for 10 years from a year old and the younger one for 4 years. They took a bit of settling in and dog 2 is a sensitive soul and had some neurotic issues which with patience and gentle handling have resolved. They're the heart of my home and I'd rescue again in a heartbeat. Absolutely the best and really rewarding when they settle and spontaneously cuddle up to you.

The one thing you need to be aware of is that even with a loving home, rescues may have their issues and foibles which will need work to get over (and tons of patience).

Absolutely!! Had rescues all our lives - never had a bad case! All have been so sweet and I'm sure they know roughly what the process is, as each has been so sweet natured and just so darn gentle and quiet (at first :) ). Honestly best decision you could make :)

On our third rescue now. She's amazing! As the 2 you're looking at have come from a home (rather than a puppy farm) they should be fine. Our current one was rescued from a puppy farm and clearly had never seen the inside of a house nor was house trained. She took maybe 3 months to settle. She's part of the family now and so loving! It's very rewarding to know you've changed (or even saved) a life!
