What breeds would you think this dog is a cross of?

We're hoping to adopt this lovely cross breed (mongrel!) dog and are just waiting for our home check.

It's a romanian dog so I think there might be carpathian shepard in there but what else and how big do you think she islikely to get? She's 7 months old

She's so cute!

German shepherd mix maybe?

JazzAnnNonMouse · 12/03/2017 14:20

She's lovely isn't she!
I originally thought German shepard but apparently capathian shepards and Caucasian shepards are which are breed's I'd not heard of before.

I think she's mixed with something smaller as her paws don't look all that big?

Belgian malinois.

I knew before I read your post that this was a Romanian dog, all of the rescues that I've seen advertised as coming from Romania look like that one.

I'd guess she's going to be mid-sized. Not huge.

Shes lovely!

Neverknowing · 12/03/2017 20:21

She's gorgeous! You better adopt her before I do, she does look German Shepard to me too haven't heard of those other breeds!

UnGoogleable · 12/03/2017 20:46

I think she's definitely a 'shepherd' type but definitely not a German Shepherd. Actually, Belgian Malinois is the wrong colour.

Just googled Carpathian Sheepdog - she's definitely got that colouring, so I'd say there's definitely some of that in her.

Keep us updated on how it goes!

GooseyLoosey · 13/03/2017 17:31

JazzAnnNonMouse · 15/03/2017 22:48

This is my Rommie.
No idea what he is, he's medium size. I'm thinking of doing one of those dna tests.

Hi Jazz this is my Romanian hound, 'chillaxing' after a training session

airforsharon · 18/03/2017 06:58

....sorry to answer your question, I couldn't guess but Rommies can be a right old mix bag. I think I read on here that someone recently DNA tested their dog so perhaps you could do that? It'd be fascinating to find out.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 18/03/2017 08:12

I read that dna testing in dogs isntvery acurate if the breed is mainly found abroad as the database that they use might not have many of that type and so matches might not be found.

Your dog is lovely v handsome. Have you had any problem's like food guarding etc?

OP posts:
airforsharon · 18/03/2017 09:08

Ah that's a shame. She'll just have to stay a mystery then Smile She's a beauty whatever her mix.

No problems with food guarding but she's nervous around other dogs (always been completely fine with my other 2) and will growl/snap if they get too close to her. I started puppy training classes with her 3 months ago, mainly to help her socialise and she's coming on pretty well. The main problem I have is barking - she's very quiet out and about - I think being a bit nervy means she doesn't want to draw attention to herself - but at home she really 'guards' the back garden and will bark at the slightest noise. I've not yet found a way to stop her, save bringing her straight back in, just hoping in time as she settles it'll decrease.

follygirl · 19/03/2017 21:48

I have to admit that I did it all the wrong way. I fell in love with him from a photo and didn't meet him until the day we collected him.
We have been extremely lucky in that he doesn't resource guard, loves people including small children and is very socialised with other dogs.
He really is an amazing dog and is loved by everyone who meets him. We're so lucky to have him.

NikNok81 · 13/01/2020 16:16

We have just adopted a dog identical to yours, do you have any pics of yours now 2 years on?? I would love to know what ours will look like fully grown x

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 14/01/2020 08:23

Back in the day we used to call that a Heinz 57 Wink

Funf · 14/01/2020 18:06

As long as the temperament is good, that's all that matters.

Hi he’s exactly like my boy I adopted in 2020. He’s 5 now. I’d love to know his breed xx

follygirl · 02/04/2025 18:16

@Bellabella77I did have him tested but he came back as a ‘mega mutt’, I.e. a real mixture of breeds.
I think he looks like a leggy kokoni dog but as that breed isn’t part of wisdom panel it didn’t register.
Teddy is still happy and healthy. We’ve had him 9 years this summer!

Springisintheairohyeah · 04/04/2025 14:38

I also have a Romanian rescue, and having met plenty of others, I've come to the conclusion that many of them are so mixed they're now a sort of breed unto themselves - even if they look physically different, there's a sort of underlying similarity which you can spot a mile away. I just call mine 100% street dog and leave it at that

Good luck with yours - despite coming from horrible circumstances and some inevitable initial issues with fear and resource guarding, these were easily dealt with, and mine has been an absolute superstar and brilliant addition to our home. Wouldn't be without him
