Ddog is due his jabs on Monday. I spotted links to this last night.

here is Facebook link

Should I worry or is this general Facebook overreaction? I know ddog was definitely given this last time and vet is likely to offer.

Could be prudent to ask what vacs your vet uses. My doodle had Lepto 2 and seems ok, 2nd round were by Vangard, so different company but compatible with the first lot. Your vet may not use Lepto 4 anyway.

Wolfiefan · 23/02/2017 10:29

We were told by breeder that in no circumstances should pup have lepto 4.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 23/02/2017 11:11

Just rung them. They only offer the Lepto 4.

Mine has had l4 looking at the labels in his vaccination card. I guess you need to way up risk and benefit.

Personally I would have a discussion with your vet as to possible side affects and contraindications rather than going on some Facebook page because unless I had seen scientific papers citing solid issues I would still go ahead. I must admit I haven't read everything in the Facebook page so no idea if any credible sources have been listed.

SparklingRaspberry · 23/02/2017 13:58

I wouldn't touch my dog with any lepto vaccine.

Saying that, I give them their puppy jabs and that's it. There's no such thing as an 'immunity booster' - you cannot boost immunity.

I am a veterinary assistant and I see hundreds of over vaccinated dogs. It's so sad.

Scuttlebutter · 23/02/2017 18:08

Sparkling - you see hundreds of over-vaccinated dogs? Shock

What exactly do you see?

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 23/02/2017 22:12

The vet gave my pup L4 as part of her puppy vaccs, I wish I'd known then what I know now - even the guidelines say this is not for puppiesSad anyway pup is fine but I won't give it to her again.
Technically it's not a vaccine as lepto is a bacteria so it doesn't work on the immune system in the same way. In fact it only works for a few months which is why vets have to give it every year unlike core vaccines which should be given every three years according to the guidelines. So I guess you have to way up risks and benefits - if you live in a high risk area you may want the L4 though it's benefits seem to be debatable if not in a high risk area don't bother.

I rang them. Felt I was getting very much the party line. Feel totally unqualified to make this decision. She as said no evidence it's caused problems. Just internet scaremongering. Hmm

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 24/02/2017 05:52

That's the problem isn't it though it could just be an internet scare as we all know people like to froth at the mouth with anything to do with vaccinations OR in a few years time it might come out that they were right all along.

If I was worried about any vaccinations and my vet did not chat sensibly to me about both positive and negative aspects so I could make my mind up I would swop vets so if you think your concerns are being ignored do you have the option of going somewhere else?

TheFlyingFauxPas · 24/02/2017 08:38

I do yes. Only had ddog a year and was hoping to build good relationship with vets. I'm signed up with a care package but it's not about the money. I wonder if it's any indication but ddog ended up with 3 lepto jabs last time. He was a rescue so starting from scratch. Original vet only gave lepto 2. Went to our vets for 2nd one who said they give lepto 4 so he'd have to come back in 4 weeks for the 2nd lot of that which he did no side effects.

*Sparkling - you see hundreds of over-vaccinated dogs? shock

What exactly do you see?*

Lots! Obviously no two dogs are the same but most reactions to lepto usually happen within 2 weeks - lepto usually effects the kidneys and liver so we're talking things such as jaundice etc

The 'less serious' reactions are sickness, muscle wastage, diarreah, lethargy etc.
Many end up with autoimmune diseases. Allergies. Cancer (long term obviously). Tumours.

I work in a specialist vets. There are two ladies who specialise in homeopathic and more natural ways of treatment, the rest are your usual 'traditional' vets, but as a practice we don't give lepto, however we treat a lot of dogs who react to it.

There have been many dogs that unfortunately have been put to sleep due to their severe reactions.

Honestly, it's not all internet scaremonging. Of course the disease itself is scary, but the chances of your dog catching it is incredibly slim and it doesn't justify putting your dog at the risk of vaccinating against it.

Don't let any vet make you feel guilty for any decision you make. They're meant to help and support you and your animal.

If they don't I highly recommend changing vets!

TheFlyingFauxPas · 24/02/2017 15:25

Thank you @SparklingRaspberry

He is due on Monday. I'll go along as he gets a check up and manicure. I spoke to receptionists. Will see what vet says. Vets are Vets for Pets if that makes any difference. I saw them somewhere mentioned as a vets who particularly offer it.

OP posts:
Noitsnotteatimeyet · 24/02/2017 16:22

Sparkling - can you cite proper peer-reviewed studies to back up those claims??

SparklingRaspberry · 26/02/2017 15:50

OP - manufactures of vaccinations (not just lepto) recommend vaccinating your dog no more than every 3 years.

So any more than that is just a money making scheme from your vets.

As I say, you cannot boost immunity. Your dog is either immune or it isn't.
I give my dogs their first lot of puppy vaccs but no more.

I'm not sure if you've heard but you can always titre test. It's basically a blood test which shows how much they're protected against certain diseases without having to vaccinate.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 26/02/2017 16:15

Thanks all. Just wrote a long reply and bloody deleted it.

Basically. I'm not going to have the 4. It feels too much of a risk and I love ❤ this fluffy little guy more than life itself.
